Hold For Applause

by The Price of Cheese

A loner becomes an unlikely source of joy for a studio audience.

An interesting take on comedy of errors, with a great twist at the very end (just when I was thinking the beginning didn't connect, it all came back around). Good work :-)

Hold for Applause

Objectionable violation of genre. Dystopian, postmodern and memorable. How did you do that huge back fall? Scissors in the throat, shucks.

It kind of sucks being 3rd wheel for a group, let alone 4th wheel, and so the concept of the unusual loner doing their own thing to cheer themselves up and be a better person seemed like we were going down the oddball but charming route. A lettuce and tomato sauce sandwich, spraying yourself in the face with the kitchen sink...all perfectly logical choices, right?
Well not at first, coming across as cringe comedy, but then the wheels started turning in the direction of a plot, as canned laughter showed character development and a feeling of relatability to this silly bugger and his charms such as smashing coffee mugs on the floor.

Bananas and scissors in the kitchen unfortunately don't always go too well together, and be careful of what you wish for whenever you watch a film that only tells one character's story, especially if they present effectively as a narrator. That ending was painful but brilliantly done.

For me, I felt the cinematography just needed a bit more focus on making sure every single shot was bulletproof. There were some sublime well framed deeply focused shots and then there were other shots in the film that in my opinion took away from the cinematic quality. I also get that it was critical to the plot but the kitchen setting was bland I felt.

I've also tried listening to that payoff whisper 5 times now and still can't hear what they said...

BUT enough with the griping, birds eye view shot obviously killer, sign used so well and the metaphorical gatekeeping of the group he was left out of one of the first non-figurative uses I've seen this year so my hat off to you there. I think overall this was pretty damn fantastic.

Story: 4/5
Technical: 3.5/5
Elements: 4/5
Overall: 4/5

This was a smart, hilarious take on comedy of errors. And so domestic. I totally understood the loneliness of the main character and enjoyed the ride we went on. Totally saw the ending coming as soon as the scissors entered, and that's not a bad thing at all. Audience was then on the edge of their seat anticipating it. Great twist at the end too. Come back and keep smashing it.
