Royalty Free Music??

This is my first year entering 48 Hour Film, however I made short films for Media Studies at high school and were allowed to use Royalty Free music or our own.
Is it ok to use Royalty Free Music downloaded from a website? Or will we need permission or is it counted as public property?

If you can reasonably prove that it is royalty free and that you've obtained it legitimately (ie. some is sold outright, if you haven't bought it yourself you can't use) then all good.

Important to remember, however, that there are potentially commercial uses for your short (ie. DVD and TV broadcast) - make sure that whatever license the music is released under that it allows that usage. For example music released with a Creative Commons Non-Commercial license would not be suitable.

I was pondering this last night.
I'm no lawyer and not trying to be smart arse, although I have been described as such by some foolish pedants.
'Commericial use' suggests to me that you can't use it for something you get paid for.
And this is a competition, and if the planets align and I manage to channel the spirits of Hitchcock/ Kubrick and Chaplin, and win this damn thing, then I don't get paid, I win.
I see winning as quite different to earning.

As I typed this I have twigged that maybe others, eg the organisers, might be 'getting paid' off the back of the competition and therefore although I don't 'get paid' it could still be commericial. Talk about answering my own question... But now that I've typed it I ain't deleting it

The DVD is available for purchase after the event, this qualifies as commercial use, even if you're not the one getting paid for it. :-)

Yeah, the 'commercial rights' requirement is purely because the best films will appear on the _commercially_ sold 48 Hrs DVD (and maybe the city finals also count as commercial use as the audience pays to attend, not sure).

So do check any music rights carefully - e.g. there's heaps of Creative Commons music available which explicitly specifies non-commercial use only.

Any suggestions? I've been looking since a while but get confused in legal jargon.

We used jamendo.com
You can search for music usable in a commercial context and were away.
Would recommend.
Not sure whether I've just given away a team secret... but the philosophy of helping other teams seems fairly inbuilt into 48 Hours culture.

It's worth noting that Big Bang and Fuzz is listed as a sponsor, so there's likely to be something interesting there.

BBF are a production music service based in Australia. They provide access to the collections of many production music libraries for radio, video and TV production. Typically, within the industry, you'd get access to their library (either online or on a supplied hard drive) and can use anything you like. At the end you pay a standard rate on any music you've ended up using.

I've been using music from Big Bang and Fuzz (especially the VideoHelper library) in TV production for the better part of 10 years, they are fantastic! So I highly recommend keeping an eye out for details on whatever that sponsorship entails.

Well noted Dylan. Indeed, we are a sponsor.

And, here's the good bit -

We're offering full access to our massive collection of music AND download access during the event itself AND permission to use music in your film (all without charge, and with all necessary rights cleared, as per the competition terms).

To get on board, register at www.bigbangfuzz.com

When registering, please put 48 HOURS (or something kinda like that) as your company name. Download access will be active during the event.

And, of course, downloads can ONLY be used in your film.

Enjoy!

I can't get that link to work.
I've gone to the website via google and registered.
What else do I need to do to use your music?
Is it as simple as downloading it and giving you the credit in the credits?

Pesky link - try this one

http://www.bigbangfuzz.com

Yep, all you need to do is register.

For credits, please use:

Music: Big Bang & Fuzz

You'll be able to download during the festival (but not before / after).

Did you put 48 HOURS (or something like that) on your registration (in the company field?)

This is massive. The Big Bang and Fuzz library is massive! Almost anything you could want is there - the biggest challenge now becomes finding it!

If you've watched TV there's a pretty good chance you've heard music from Big Bang and Fuzz.

I'll give you all a quick primer, because I care...

Big Bang and Fuzz are the local (Aus/NZ in our case) agent for a wide range of production music labels. Each of those labels regularly release albums full of music designed especially for use in video and TV (and potentially other things like that). In some places they'd be handled as a buy-out where you pay up front for the album and it's content and can then use as you wish. In NZ we do it differently - you get access to the content for free but essentially have to license what you use. Big Bang and Fuzz in this case are waiving that licensing cost for us.

When you log in to the website you're confronted with a music browser basically. On the left is the list of music providers (Labels), click on any one and their list of albums will pop out below. They are usually grouped thematically, but every provider is a little different. Select and album and you can then browse and preview all the tracks. Find one you like and you can either download it, favourite it, or add it to a playlist for later review

If browsing by provider doesn't work for you then you can browse by style - it's all there.

You can also search all the tracks in the database with keywords - the searchable words will vary from label to label, but usually instruments, styles, themes or scene styles are useful.

No, Big Bang and Fuzz don't pay me, but I've used their music professionally for nearly ten years and I'm a big fan of their collection (they carry my absolute favourite label but I'm not telling you what it is!).

I really is hard to express how much music there is on there and how diverse it is. The is stuff from real actual indie bands, there is weird kind of tinny synth music, full orchestral classical music, original score pieces. There are also sound design elements - drones, wooshes, hits...

I've just spent an entirely unreasonable amount of time listening to random tracks.
