Hamilton discussions

in reply to Captain sensible:

send an additional congratulations to TAC studios for their Z Grade zombie Nazis from space film

Totally agree - I think these guys are very unlucky not to make the final, I thought they were brilliant!

Hamilton discussions

in reply to Captain sensible:

I think the voting for heat 3 was seriously skewed by the size of some of the attending teams;

True, true - our extras bought lots of friends to see them get eaten by zombies, so voting was definitely (if unintentionally) skewed in our favor.

I agree with you that the team voting is a much fairer system - nice work from the Hamilton organisers for trialling that. Even better would be team voting where you can't vote for your own team!

Heat Observations/Trends/Drinking game?

in reply to AJ:

Now that's an interesting discussion. Which genres this year could easily justify the wilhelm scream?

I feel like there were plenty this year where it could fit fairly seamlessly - Alien, Bad Seed, Horror Comedy, Supernatural, Survival, Z-Grade...even Science-Fiction. And Christmas movies make me want to scream too :-)

Heat Observations/Trends/Drinking game?

Well, we got the Horror-Comedy genre, which is pretty much custom-made for having a Wilhelm scream in it - so I feel like we got off lightly there!

The genre you wish you'd got.

Z-Grade, definitely. Although we got Horror-Comedy which was awesome too, and I'm sure some people will say we did Z-Grade anyway.
:-)

All round, though - excellent selection of genres this year, I thought.

Ultra teams: What did you think?

in reply to Strange:

I guess i shouldn’t really pass judgement till ive seen what the ultra teams made. But my fear is that all to many of the ultra film will be based in comedy and in particular, inside jokes.

Well, our genre this year was Horror Comedy, so we were kinda stuck with comedy! That said, it made it really easy to decide on a direction - we had a Black Comedy from a couple of years ago that was the obvious choice, and we still had the main actors available.

City Nominees Ranking

in reply to Jay Baker:

DF-10 won

They also got best director.

Bad George got script and original score.

I think Taktix got cinematography? Odd got best actor. I'm a little hazy on the rest.

in reply to Robstar Rapper:

Who ended up winning the Ham Finals?

DF-10 won, with a Real-time movie (which, as you'd expect for a city winner, was really good!)

Most common uses of required elements

in reply to AJ:

Our film was a Charlie Chaplin-esque (silent, B&W, etc) comedy of errors , and had our hero's knitted jersey snagging on a push and unravelling as he walked...I thought that worked well as a scene which would have been good in the movie anyway even if it wasn't a required element.

Got a nomination for it, too, which was good - looking forward to the Hamilton final tonight!

Most common uses of required elements

There were definitely a fair few balls of wool rolling round, some completely gratuitously.

One school team (which I have a feeling may have been a solo effort?) was a romance entirely starring sheep (actual real live sheep, that is), voiced by the team(/person). It was hilarious.

Drinks and Celebrations BEFORE the Hamilton City Final?

So - to steal a great idea from several other cities, are there any other Hamilton teams who would be keen to meet up for some drinks/food/film-related-socialising before the final on Thursday night?

Meet some fellow film makers, swap horror stories, share some laughs...y'know.

I've booked the upstairs at Good Neighbour in Rototuna (nearest decent place to the theatre I could think of). We (Bad George) will be there from 6:30, come on up and join us!

And if you could reply to the post below, that would be good too...just so I can warn the bar if they look like getting swamped. :-)

City Nominees Ranking

in reply to Scotty:

Just a wee point Pongakawa School The Real Deal has two nominations:))

Oh - sorry, you're right - one had a dash in the name and the other didn't so it messed up my counting. Fixed it now. :-)

(Ps - nice work, yet again - I always enjoy the Pongakawa entries).
