Wellington Finals Botched!

in reply to mikedensem:

but it is made of cardboard ;-)

it's not the paper that matters, it's the handshake, the golf claps, the hugs from your team and the high-fives from your 'competitors'. It's the cheers in the bar after and the hearty applause that you remember for years to come - not a piece of paper.

Besides if people are given the mic they just stand up and say controversial comments on the concept of competitive art and nobody wants that... ;-)

Hearty congrats to not only all the winners this year - but everyone who even tried to make a film, all of us know how bloody hard it is - whether you got cardboard or not.

Which genre was the hardest to pull off this year? And why was it yours?

We got 'last Person on Earth' and loved it as a genre. I'd never even thought of making a 'post apocalyptic' film until 7.01pm on Friday evening so it was a cool challenge to start from a truly blank page (isn't that the point of this whole thing?!?!).

We had a real blast taking the tropes of the genre, playing the audience into that familiar territory and then twisting things into a new direction. It all started with, "what if they..." during our brainstorm on Friday night and everything fell into place after that.

There is a cinematic idea that I love - you create the world of your film in as much detail as you can, even if it's a detail you don't film or tell the audience. Then you create a character (or characters) in as much detail as you can - their backstory, motivations, sense of self, who they think they are and so on. Once you know those things in detail - you film a documentary about them. Their actions, decision and lines of dialog are what they would actually do - if you have to wonder why they would do or say something, or if their actions are to serve your film and not their story - you haven't built the world of your characters in enough detail - if you do it right, the film should write itself...

in reply to Nick Burridge:

Hi Nick, Excellent work! One small thing, our film made by team 'Begged, Borrowed, Stolen' (as one of the Out of Town Teams in the Dunedin division) is missing it's title - our film is called '48 Days Later' - would you mind updating that for us?

thanks mate,
Scott

we finally posted our film - have a look

It only took 48 Hours to make, but about 4 months to post it online...

So have a look at our film 'A Right Tool' and let us know what you think! We were really pleased with how it turned out and pretty humbled to win the awards we did...

What I learned this year

in reply to zer05um:

Yeah, PluralEyes would have helped, but a little too expensive at present - $399 US is outside my range for the immediate future.

one 'cheaper' way around that is using Adobe Premiere Pro CC - it has an audio sync feature (it's actually for making multi camera sequence, but it works perfectly) - you can get CC free for the fist month - so get it 3 weeks early, practice and you'll be ready to go.

the classic zero cost solution is a clap - clap your hands loudly in front of the camera, you'll see it on the video and more importantly both the camera and sound recorders will pick it up - just match the wave forms in the edit. with a bit of practice it's really easy to line up in the edit.

What I learned this year

in reply to Craig:

yeah we had the approach the script would be locked by the the end of Friday - no matter what. that everything was going to be filmed on Saturday - no matter what. Realistically you need all of Sunday to edit and all of Saturday to shoot. It's just too much to do at the end if you don't stay disciplined.

I'd say the best way to edit with 2 computers would be to have one editor choosing the best takes, syncing audio to it and then exporting those 'Best' clips to the second editor who does the final 'fine' edit. doing half and and half of the film is asking for trouble - not to mention if you say, 'wouldn't this part be better at the start...' you're stuck.

I think you are better off having a computer that has lots of free space on it, you restart it every couple of hours and you have an editor that can work with a director and be willing to go FAST!

NZ Mountain Film Festival

Well worth doing! It's a fun process and a real challenge getting footage and making something with it. And it's a good prize too... it helped me upgrade my camera system a couple years ago ;-)

What I learned this year

in reply to Craig:

On thing that helps with render time is to render out sections of the final film that are completed and then re-import them into your editing program. The things that slow down a render are things like effects (colour manipulation, cross fades, text on the screen, etc.) If you have a section locked - export it and it's done.

we did that this year - we had our film finished except for the score. We exported it while our composer was finishing the music. We then added the music to the rendered sequence and re-rendered the completed film. The final render took less than 15min.

What I learned this year

I think every film you make - whether it's for this competition or otherwise you end up learning a LOT. A few things that I always try and remember:

1 - Sound: Sound is way more important than visuals. If you can't hear the characters, everything else is pointless. We record all the audio with an H4n Zoom external mic on a boom and sync it in post. We also record ambient room sounds, foley, etc. we want full control of the audio in the final film.

2 - Script: don't write a script so long that you end up with a 15min rough cut. A page of double space script should be about a minute of screen time. Stick to that or you'll end up having to re-write your story in the edit so it fits into 7min.

3 - Keep it collaborative. If your extras are bored because they aren't engaged - engage them. Tell them to make up a character and give that character an arc. They may be miming in the background - but what are they miming.

4 - try and make a film that works outside the constructs of the competition. If it is dependant upon the wink to the camera when you use your required elements then you need to keep writing. The best films will always stand alone and still be cool out of context.

5 - Have fun - it has to be fun, it's too much work if it isn't fun!
