Thread about anything else!

Posting another idea of fun things. Again this is in the vein of community engagement/building.

Cryptic clues towards what one of the requirements are.

For example, take the line of dialogue or technical element. Once these are confirmed. Pick an obscure movie, and tweet out that the technical element is in this film. Or that this years line of dialogue is dropped somewhere in this film.

Now it should be really really obscure. And no team should actually know with any degree of certainty what the required element is before the weekend. But it would be fun if 48hours inspired a bunch of us to watch an obscure or classic film before the weekend in order to find a clue, then we could all take to the forums, discuss the film and try to guess what the requirement might be.

in reply to Bloydd:

Good Thoughts

There needs to be (an option for) some award at a regional level

Yes. 100% yes. Duh?!

Ultra should be judged on how well you use the extra element

Yes. 1,000% yes. Duh x1,000,000

Change the requirement from 5 years in the comp to 1

Disagree. I like the idea that ultra is something for new coming teams to look up to, something to aspire to. A set of stripes that need to be earned.

To that end though. Ultra just needs to be more a special badge to add to your team intro. A unique T Shirt at the launch, ‘literal badges’ or collectables that you earn by doing ultra and that you can collect over the years. There should be a special section in the site screening room. (There isn’t even a badge for it in the screening room is there?) these are all pretty small and stupid but in I think a little would go a long way here.

And I’ve said it before but here goes: ultra should grant a team extra powers. (Extra maximum runtime feels like the obvious choice to me, but I understand the arguments against this*) or what if Ultra teams got to trade the ultra requirement for one of the other requirements? Or if signing up for ultra ment you were guaranteed to be able to pick your own genre from the selection, I don’t know but make it a bigger deal, not just extra challenge. Make it exciting! If the teams going to take on a potentially weekend crushing extra challenge (and it should be potentially weekend destroying) there should be some give and take.

Diversify which part of production Ultra affects

Agree, but also, we’re only two years in. The key thing I think ultra should do is blindside teams.

Ultra has to be completely clear by 7pm on Friday

Abso-freaking-lootley

Having never done ultra, I’ve never run into this problem, but I’m aware of it. Even if you think its obvious as to what ultra is, a blog post diving deeply into the technical requirements of the challenge should go live at 7pm. What does and does not count as completing the challenge.

Possibly also a a fair play rule could also apply. As in, ‘subvert the rules at your own risk, we want teams running at the challenge head on not trying to get around it.

Make it optional on the weekend?

Disagree for ultra. BUT, really like this as an extra extra thing? Would need to put those teams in the running for a special award. But i like the idea of something extra to opt into for fun. Like a second even weirder line of diologue? Or an added technical element, something that will broaden teams use of cinematic language and thats easy to judge and give a special award to (like the match cut one year - side note, best technical requirement there’s ever been)

I like Ultra in concept, I look forward to doing it one year, but so far I haven’t regretted not doing it

*arguments for and against giving ultra teams extra run time
It’s easier for the judges, comp and everyone involved if the films overall are shorter. shorter by and large makes for better films. Agree agree agree. BUT

Shorter makes for better films, disproportionately in the area of the newer in experienced teams. Ultra’s supposed to be for veteran teams that have already learnt that the shorter/tighter edits will make their films the better. So why not open the runtime back up to those veteran teams, most likely many of them wont even use the extra run time, but my hope is that some teams will use that extra time to tackle ideas and scenes that need some extra room to breath.

And I’ll just counter one possible counter argument, ‘its not fair to give some teams extra runtime, while all the other teams are stuck with mins, 48hours should be a level playing field’

Well, it’s not, and it never will be. By design, 48hours is ‘unfair’. If 48hours was as fair as possible, every team would be given the same genre, truth is some genres are way way harder than others. (That’s the nature of the beast, and thats OK)

Here's a fun idea I had for the competion weekend.

you know how they were texting out spot prizes throughout the weekend last year?

well this kinda plays off that a bit.

Imagine if at random times throughout the weekend they text out a unique hashtag, and then teams have 5 minutes to upload a photo of whatever is happening to them at that point in the weekend with that unique hashtag. then spot prizes or something for the teams with the most interesting stuff going on.

or just combine the two, instead of 'first team to text back with their name and address wins prize x' give the prizes out to the teams who tweet out the best stuff.

or put it another way, what I want to see more of this year is social media engagement.

more than anything I want to see more behind the scenes photos of teams from around the country.

Shoot Weekend confirmed: June 14 - 16

only leaving a comment now because Ruth mentioned that its 'great to hear the different perspectives regarding this issue.'

Feels like a storm in a teacup to me, but there are two rules that I feel already cover the potential issues that might arise this year.

48Hours top 10 things guaranteed to disqualify your short
- Explicit & realistically portrayed graphic violence
- Any other depictions that may be offensive to the general public or specifically directed at individuals or groups.

'depictions that may be offensive to the general public' is extremely broad and I would be more than happy for city managers to lean into this and block any films from being shown or progressing in the comp that they feel were not made in good faith or might cause offence.

I'll be quite disappointed if a hard and fast NO GUNS rule is implemented. I feel it would be much more appropriate for the city managers to mention, plainly and simply that they will not tolerate films that make fun of gun violence.

or If the organisers decide to make one of the required elements this year something to do with not using guns then that would be ok, and more or less in the spirit of the competition and not without precedent, although it would feel a bit weird to me as the required elements usually get us to add things to our films, not to not include them. For most teams being told to not include guns would be a non issue and probably wouldn't effect their weekend at all (feel free to take that as a point in favour of the rule)

I'll be saddened if a blanket ban censorship rule is introduced. not because I disagree with the intent behind such a rule, but because I dislike censorship of 'art' in any form.

anecdotally in my 10 years doing 48hours films we've included a gun only once, and I don't think it glorified firearms in anyway. and in fact the films ultimate view on the character that used the gun was that he was a hot headed idot - if anything the film had an anti firearms stance.

I'd caution teams against any use of guns in their films this year, but I wouldn't tell them they can't.

more than anything though I'll find it quite ironic if the filmmaking event run by Ant Timpson starts specifically censoring what people can put in their films.

CHCH Predictions - Top15, Shortlist25 & a School List

Being on the other side of the shortlist fence, where we made the shortlist and not the finals,

Not making the finals is tough, so making the shortlist takes a bit of the sting out.

Good change to the comp id say, keep it going.

Review Site

in reply to Nick Burridge:

What about merging the screening room and reviews site?

Love the site, its working really well, But also:

When a film is uploaded to the screening room could a link be added to that films review profile? (I’m hoping to review more films once they are available on the screening room)

Also, when viewing one films review profile, it would be great to have next and previous buttons to go to go through the heats that way. So you can review one, hit next and review from there, rather than going back to a list of the heats and figuring out which one comes next

Either that or, last year once you had reviewed a film the link to review that film would have a strike through so it was easy to see what you had and hadn’t reviewed.

Love the addition of the poster. Really really nice.

Aaaand, i tried to ad an emoji to one review but the site rejected it. Probably put it low on the list of things to change but it would be nice to be able to use emoji ?

2018 Recurring Themes

I have noticed a lot of films about boys unable to talk to girls, and then when they finally do the girl falls for him simply for being brave enough to talk to her.

Lots of puddles being splashed by a foot. All framed and shot the exact same way too

And yes, a lot of people being hit by cars.

Lots of school teams depicting txting on screen, the cellphone use amount the school teams is quite telling too.

Lots of teams embracing the Swede style to great effect too

Changes to Awards

my only issue with the Male and Female awards being combined is that there are now fewer awards for Actors overall

why not, Best Lead Performance, Best Supporting Role, Best Cameo Performance.

Heck, I'd love to see an award for best background character with no lines, for all those mums and dads who get roped in for a bit part at the last minute.

and as I've said before, this could extend and get quite fun

Best Physical Performance
Best Joke Delivery
Best Monologue
Best Transformative Performance
Best Comedy Performance
Best Dramatic Performance
Best Child Actor

To go along with the MTV Movie Awards Style
I want to see

Best Kiss
Best Fight
Best Stunt
Best Joke
Best Location
Best Oner
Most Impressive GET (like that year a team burned down a house)
Best Physical Gag
Best Special Effect
Best Broken Fourth Wall
Best use of V Can
Best, best, best, best. make the awards more fun.

This model would also shine a light on teams who did cool stuff in their films but didn't necessarily make a film worthy of any Grand or City Finals.

More than anything, I think there should be awards (not prizes, just an award is fine) for the best film in each genre.

the way I see it, because of the genres teams arn't competing on an even footing, some genres are harder than others, some genres set you up to succeed in a a way that others don't and that's totally fine, its all part of the format.

but I'd like to see an award for the best of each genre. every year theres a genre that naturally doesn't get well represented in the finals. lets give a shout out to the team that managed to make the most out of the really tough genres.

But Hey, I appreciate Judging takes time and effort.

and let me just say the last thing i want to see this comp do, is put any part of the completion on social media. the year that anything is determined by a vote at the 48hours website, and teams can start social media campaigns to get votes every day. that's the last time I'll be competing in 48hours
