What makes a story resonate with an audience?

Beginning, Middle, End - cause and effect, logic - yeah sure.
But there's more to it than that. Like character arcs and how things feel.

What are the things that you think are most important to making a story resonate with an audience?

Then again Underworld II was quite a good story and Kate was undoubtedly in the hot zone at the time.

Mostly, but what about SALT? That Angelina flick was pretty lame propaganda.

When Star quality dominates too much we can get marketing machines peddling branded products rather than real films about anything of substance.
