What I learned this year

Well... my second year managing/directing/producing and editing a 48hours film... I must say, despite our vehicle crapping itself just before the launch and our editor coming down with a debilitating vomiting bug on Saturday morning, it felt fairly relaxed this year!

Once again i learnt alot!:

1. Flying back from Auckland for an ETA in Wellington at 6.35pm Friday is VERY stressful! especially when you learn that the only person with keys to get into the team base has just blown up the car and is stranded on the way to picking up half the team AND the editing computer...

2. make sure you have more than one vehicle and driver available at any one time :D

3. Underwater cameras are AWESOME!

4. Don't let your cinematographer talk you into letting him not use a tripod for a single shot... Tripod = good.

5. Editing film is like riding a bike... first time back, you fall off and break your arm and from then on it is fine... It is good to know I can still do it myself if I don't have an editor :D

6. Sound off the camera (Canon 7D is INFINITELY better than off a cheap external mic (OMG the HUM!)

7. A good computer makes all the difference - whilst not perfect, Our film is way cleaner and more professional looking than last time. I could actually watch our film pre-render this year - that makes editing SO much easier! The render took 20mins instead of 3 hours :D

8. Getting up at 7am Sunday not 5am to continue editing actually ended up more productive than getting up at 5am (based on last year)

9. Experience helps! 80% of the team this year was in the team last year so I didn't have to answer endless questions about the competition!

10. Alcohol and spa pool on Friday evening makes for a very tired team come Saturday morning...

11. Facebook is a great way to organise your team... except for that one person who refuses to sign up for facebook... grrr....

We had so much fun this year :D

What did you guys learn?

Sure, but sound off a decent external mic is infinitely better than sound out of any DSLR.

I'd like the technical element next year to be a song.
Ditch musical as a genre for a year and force everyone to give it a bash.

Yeah I know :p

What would you recommend for a decent price? I don't think we have the knowledge or skill or technology (currently... this will change with practice I think) to easily sync external audio...

I was looking at this... Its about the max I would want to pay seeing as we only ever make films for this competition...

I would like that! I was sort of hoping for musical this year just to see if we could pull it off (no one in our team will own up to being musically talented!)

Interesting idea. You have to balance the elements against the number of bad shorts and I think that would make a lot of bad shorts, because recording a song uses very different skills than making a normal short.

I guess it'd stop everyone from being afraid of musical though, which would be one upside.

I don't know. I've always been able to borrow a really great mic, so I've never had to do the research.

We learnt that 30 minutes green screen practise prior to 48Hrs weekend is possibly not enough preparation for doing a movie that was intentionally 90 percent green screen.

Not actually getting a lot of acting footage until after 5pm Saturday increased everyones stress levels including our director who experienced a full range of emotions over the weekend.

Got it in 15 minutes before 7 and we are all thrilled with the result, despite only having 7 hours in which to edit (well done to our editor) and having to cut a second time after forgetting to click off the Adobe title card the first time (movie name was wrong!). Thank goodness for a 20 minute render time.

Looking forward to Heat 15 Wellington ...

It's nothing super exciting, but we realized at about 3:30pm on Sunday that we didn't have a title for our film.

We'd agreed to name our film when we came up with a good title, which didn't really happen on friday or saturday despite multiple suggestions being made.

On sunday at 3:30 we realised we needed to put the edit together, so we finally picked something, then we slapped a title sequence together pretty haphazardly and got it onto the title card and wrap up form at the last minute. Phew.

It's tricky - the Rode VideoMic series is good, but ultimately it suffers from the same problem as the on-board mic (although less handling noise) which is that it's too far from the sound.

The key to clean dialogue is getting the mic as close as possible to the person speaking. You can get a VideoMic and tape it too a broomstick, then use a 3.5mm audio extension lead to run it to the camera, but those cables aren't designed for distance, so there's a good chance of introducing noise.

The ideal is either a stand-alone recorder paired with a decent XLR mic, or a camera adapter paired with even a cheap but quality XLR mic.

We find that naming the film is more challenging than making the film. Think ours was finally named at 5pm after I picked a random word in my frustration at wanting to get the render done and no-one had anything better to contribute!
