What are your pet peeves in 48 Hours?

What do you see in the films that gets under your skin?
For example, any kind of overdone topical reference/joke/meme never lands well, and really dates the film.
Not looking forward to the ammount of Trump jokes which will surely be in the competition this year.

There have been a few films that grated on me with the 'how offensive can we be' approach.
Artistic expression blah blah...
The worst example of this was several years ago when a film had a centaur drug and rape a child. Yet it made the city finals.

The inconsistencies across judging panels. There have been examples of using copyrighted music equalling an instant DQ and then others doing that winning city prizes. While there will always be mistakes, the judges should have a tick chart. Does this film do X, Y, or Z? This is especially important when making decisions about what plays in the city finals. Missing X, Y, or Z and it playing in the heats is fine- there are simply too many films to check. But the fine tooth comb needs applying before announcing the finalists and playing them.

Ah so true! It's almost part of the game at this point though. I remember as a teenager thinking you HAD to include V, or else your film would be disqualified.

I still get asked every year if we have to include a V can.

My other peeve leading up to the competition is when you mention that you're doing the competition and people say "oh what genre are you doing?" and you have to explain the concept of the entire weekend to them.

Something that is a peeve but also a joy to see: the different ways people try to review their own film in order to bump up the score. So much creativity!

Teams not putting their film into the Screening Room.

In CHCH last year I think there were 80ish entries. Only 38 have made it to the SR & not all of the city finalists are even there. This is rubbish and has been for a number of years.

Others:
- "Getting ready for my day" series-of-shots that start many films. Popping toast, boiling jugs etc. Or brushing teeth, flushing toilet, straightening tie
- Age-appropriate casting eg teens playing uniformed police detectives

SCREENING NOW: End - Real Time; CHCH25s
REVISIT: The Stile - Star-crossed Lovers; ULTRA48; CHCH25s

I am guilty of this. I'm not sure if I could find my old films if I wanted to and that's a real shame. I'm very sorry.

My pet peeve is "professional teams" that "play it safe". Maybe it's a symptom of an industry that strives to stamp out risk, maybe there's some other reason. As a former 'Best Bad Film' finalist, I appreciate a terrible short nearly as much as a fantastic one- it is its own art form after all. "Playing it safe" and creating something special are mutually exclusive. "Safe" is a recipe for mediocrity and that's just about the worst place for a film to be.

I realise they might have different priorities for their films but every year it makes me a little sad.

I'm mostly just jealous of their camera cranes though.

I have to agree - it kinda spoils the spirit of the competition when a team does 'good enough'. For me 48Hours is about going balls to the wall and pushing the limit, not following an old recipe sure to succeed.

'Playing it safe'
I've seen a few items from Ant Timpson that are wanting teams to take more risks.
Will be interesting to see whether something in the elements changes this year to encourage/force this

This definitely gets my goat too - and not just when they're "playing it safe".
There's a particular aesthetic - and it's not restricted to professional teams - that turns me right off. Now, there's nothing really to fault: it's a clean image with crisp sound, good make up, serviceable acting and incredible special effects... but totally plastic. Films like this will tend to rise to the top, which you can't really fault since they are well-produced.. but I'm not here for objectively good films; I'm here for that je ne sais quoi, the 3am meltdowns, the 12 year olds behind a camera for the first time and the 6.55pm dangerous driving... give me soul!

but yeah cranes and drone shots... jelly

edit: there's been a few people reply in the time it took me to compose this. I read Timpson's facebook post encouraging more "out there" films with some scepticism... while some competitors might be encouraged to take more risks, unless there's been some edict delivered to every regional judge I don't see how the make-up of the finalists will be any different

Hahaha! I just watched it and I have to agree! I wish that there was more of a market (or maybe just a finance base) for bizarro indie movies because with a bit of money behind it, I would happily watch this as a feature length film.

Edit: Mike, I read your old team name as "William Shatner's Pants Animal" which would have been the best team name ever

It comes from a pub quiz team name I heard once- which was William Shatner's Undies. We stole it and morphed it into 'Pants'
