Speaking of extra special challenges - curious to know if the UC exams were considered in the decision for that weekend? sorta wipes out my team, I'm likely not the only one either. Don't want to throw my toys, but 7 weeks notice to possibly have to re-plan a team entirely is a real bummer.

Hi Joe, we’ve had quite a few things to work around, one of the main ones being the film festival and venues and getting the finals rated by the censors. This meant we needed to bring it up a bit earlier. We’ve also had to wait to confirm funding as well so it’s been tricky finding a date that can work without waiting until the end of the year which also coincides with exams. We know it won’t suit everyone and sorry it’s not so great for you this year. AJ might be able to hook you up with some people. He was joking about a blind date team last year.

Hook one up for Hamilton! I reckon participants would end up with at least one new friend and maybe one new nemesis.

Loads needs updating- the rules currently have the dates for last year's comp.

It'll happen as they get the chance.
Classically I think the city info is usually a fortnight ish out from the comp.

Not to be a downer but i'm curious about peoples thoughts around the use of guns this year? After what happened in chch i figured it might be a good discussion to have before the competition kicks off? Id personally rather there not be an out right ban but Id understand if that was the case. Maybe just a "hey teams just keep it respectful" message Type thing could work??

Totally agree re: use of guns. I'm sure an outright ban or rules in place would lead to some people kicking up a fuss or people trying to find loopholes and stuff to be clever which could end up being insensitive (although being ridiculously insensitive to Christchurch in the past has worked out VERY well in at least one case).

I think at launch even just a comment when they usually talk about calling the police if you're going to use guns in public, to add that discretion should be used and to just be respectful of what happened in Christchurch. Will be three months to the day on the Saturday of the weekend.

At the very least I can't imagine too many Chch teams will be running around in public, guns akimbo.

We (the teams) could make an agreement a bit like the media has done regarding the case and simply actively choose to not use guns etc and to be conscious of the situation.
Nutbar Films is happy to abide by this.

I think a ban on guns is a bit extreme. No one is calling for movies to be banned from cinemas if they use guns, or to cancel all tv shows using guns. There's no reason to make 48 hour films an exception to this and start banning them. It is a sensitive subject and people should be careful about how they choose to use them. Any use of guns in a similar way to the terrorist attack in Christchurch would be incredibly stupid, and should fall under the rule that's already in place to prevent offensive films from being screened. Teams also need to be extra careful about filming with guns and taking the appropriate safety measures so the public aren't concerned about it.

Of course even if nothing is done to the rules, we may have judges who aren't as comfortable with their use anymore. It's definitely a risk to all teams who want to use them this year. We may not see action films making it as far in the competition because of it.

Unless I'm advised otherwise, I'm not gonna disqualify teams if they have guns in their film.
But don't put guns in your film.

I imagine there also won't be any genres that encourage the use of guns, I'm thinking Action & Crime might be out this year.
Agree about not disqualifying, unless the required element this year is "not having a gun in your film", films shouldn't be DQ'd for it

I don't think there should be any discouraging or encouraging of the use of firearms in this years short films. Art, in all forms, is surely part of the healing process and I'd rather teams felt free to write and shoot whatever they feel like. It's a scary thought to imagine teams resisting including a firearm into their story (if it was needed) because they fear a potential social backlash etc.

I bring this up because AJ (Chch City Manager) said (and I assume jokingly), "...don't put guns in your film". Perhaps he could clarify that he certainly was joking.
