Post-Partum

So, the weekend has wrapped!
Did you get yours turned in on time?
Did you barely make it?
Did you get buried under an avalanche of circumstance and/or "other"?

How'd it go?
What's the craziest thing that happened?

The whole weekend "flowed" pretty well for us.
The story idea came quickly, the script pretty quickly,
and we didn't run into any major snags until the end of the shoot
and then, again, on the latter half of the edit day.

We got it in on time, with 13 minutes to spare.
Feels good, man.

The craziest thing for us was probably that I lost the key to my motorcycle
while I was riding it around Lyttelton.
I had to jam my car key into it to turn it off.

The shoot and edit were pretty much uneventful in that we had no massive technical failures or anything.

However we didn't really have a finished script until about midday on Saturday. Didn't shoot our first frame of video until 2pm, ran out of daylight and had to rethink some things and then didn't actually wrap until 4am.

But we were in on time (at about 6:40 I think) and we're delighted with the end product (well me and the editor are, and my wife who came into the edit suite for a bit - no one else has seen any of it... Bwahahahaha).

Got mine in with 15 minutes left but I really shouldn't have ended up cutting it so close. We got musical (which we were actually very prepared for as my twin/co-director is doing a degree in composition) which meant that by around 1 am on Sunday we had the edit locked and moved on to orchestrating the music, sound mixing, color correction etc... but at 5:30 in the afternoon terror struck when Pro Tools refused to bounce out the final sound mix so I could render the final cut out of Premiere.

Eventually it bounced the audio but at this point I was already in a bus on my way to the finish line so I ended up standing around awkwardly while my laptop rendered the final cut of the short. Forgot to do the MD5 checksum though, so hopefully nothing happens to my USB stick.

Overall though I'm quite happy with how the weekend went, but anything would have been an improvement over last years entry when computer issues resulted in my team handing in a cut which was so rough it still had me saying "Action" in it.

TBALC made it... it was probably the most stress free of all entries we've had to date. Although it didn't necessarily feel like it as we were waiting for the export to go through.

If I wasn't so madly numb with lack of sleep I'd probably be very happy with how it turned out.

Really looking forward to seeing how Goodfellas, Lens Flare and Outwits did with One Shot. Challenging genre, but it's got its benefits.

Best writing session I've ever had, worst everything else.

Was really disappointed when I first saw my genre, then I realised it's actually this year's Do Anything You Like category. So I did.

Great fun, but as I ran out of time long (really long) before being finished and cut 60% of my story out, after 6pm, and ran to the finish line at 6:58 I've never actually seen the whole thing, so I'm looking forward to the heats to see if it's any good.

Can't quite believe I made it, frankly. Never had so much stress in 48hours before. Not even close.

Pretty straight forward writing & planning session once everyone agreed my idea was the best!

Started filming around 11am. Five minutes later it began raining. Awful wind too.

Seemed for a great part of the day we were getting nowhere.

A ladder collapsed under our director and despite swinging on a beam like some deranged chimp to save himself, still managed to bang his head. Kept calling everyone by their wrong name for the next hour.

Organised, constructive edit - plenty of time for review. Pretty happy with our final product.

Made the hand-in around 6:15, where we were greeted by a smiling Andrew Todd.

Swamped by the four teams of past and present students from the school I teach at who all made the deadline. Me so proud!

Awesome weekend as usual - can't wait for the heats! I see that the review site is updated, so can't wait to get into the review phase!

We had over 900 viewers, quite a few stayed a while.
We had about 30 watching as we drove to the finish line.

When we watched the film through towards the end, looking for minor changes to make we covered the camera- they weren't happy.

Went to bed Fri night with a good script beginning but absolutely no ending -was so stressed that it never even occurred to me to do a Lord of the Rings spoof (my genre was Fantasy Adventure) but that's probably a good thing originality-wise as I'm expecting quite a few of those - happily a decent ending occurred to me at 8:30 Sat morning.

Sound recorded Sat morning (had to do 5 different voices myself after planned voice actors were unavailable), sound edited and animation prepped Sat afternoon, photography Sat evening, animation and editing all Sun, couldn't think of a good title but never mind, finished at 5pm.

No disasters, but certainly quite a few hours wasted - "I'm sure I had _three_ Lego horses!" - mostly due to lack of organisation.

Pretty pleased, considering I'm a one-person team. Not expecting to be a national finalist :) but I think the film is at least watchable and will hopefully get a few laughs.

Hardest 48 yet, for me. I spent too much of Saturday fabricating my supporting cast, and we didn't start shooting until late afternoon. We were wrapped before 11, but I was drawing backgrounds and other animation elements until 3am on Sunday. I've got a lot of regrets, but the biggest one is the 3 hours I spent trying to get some sleep before starting the edit. Then I wasted a few hours trying to work out how to do things in unfamiliar software. But, considering it's about the fifth or sixth video I've edited ever (should have practised more), it came together OK. But not until about 6.15. Then the render took about an hour, so I got to watch the deadline come and go like an evil bastard.

So I handed a (mostly) finished film in, but not until 7.30. I haven't watched it through yet, either, so I hope it's watchable.

Never work with puppets.

I was supervising 2 school teams from Hamilton:

Midnight Oil and Grasshopper Studios

Midnight OIl
Got a one-shot and decided to do a one-shot horror set at night so didn't even start filming until 6pm on Saturday :)

Yes in on time, 12 ins to go
The hardest part was a key actor was not available to re-record lines lost in the background so used a stand in a digitally altered both voices to match each other (Don't know why they didn't just re-record his lines from the new person)

The best part was the death machine - 32gb ram and sick processing speed. Rendering took all of 2 minutes.

Grasshopper Studios
The junior team took off to a flying start. They had everything under control and all filmed and by 6pm on Saturday. The editors (5 of them) had been working away diligently on their different sections. It all looked great until 3 hours out from the deadline - The name of our film :) - when they came to piece all the sequences together into the final film. We then found that their had been no system for naming files, or even where to store them. There were multiple stages of the same file with names like chapel_final_version and then chapel_use_this_one. So with 3 hours to go we had to basically re-edit the whole thing scavenging the sequences we could find and filling in the blanks.

We have 3 interweaving story lines and ran out of time to color correct the 3 stories, wanted a red tint for the romantic line, a cold blue for the drug user and white, over exposed look for the religious line. (this was in all the missing sequences) Then we hit render with 40 mins to go, it took 12 to render. we opened the file and it only played 1 second :O

Re-rendered with 30 mins to go at SD and it worked only to find the previous file opened was an aborted render and the full HD version had been there all along.

We scrambled to the finish line across the other side of Hamilton and got there with 5 mins to go :)

Both teams are already planning next years competition.

2013 - Grasshopper Studios - Converging Storylines:The Last Hand
2012 - Midnight Oil - 1-Shot (Horror):Mine

Time to take an apparently deceased 550D to Canon service ;-(

And if fate deals you a 5DmkIII the Wednesday prior to the comp, it may also have dealt you a problematic codec.

Moral victory to camera 3 then, the 60D, the only camera that could remain functional and keep a charge when all about it had lost theirs.

Good times though... if you have to call a doctor to the set to stop the lead actor's bleeding you know you're giving it a good go.

;-)

Went great on post-production side of things (I can't comment on the shoot as I wasn't present during these times). I even learned some new tricks, so that's always a bonus.

And I went through the weekend WITHOUT caffeine (that's two years of 48hours without caffeine now).
