Life After The V48

I'm just curious whether or not the rest of you do any other video endeavors the rest of the year,
or, like a beautiful and precious flower, you just pop up for a weekend once a year.

I typically do a few video projects throughout the year,
but they're usually favors that people ask of me (interviews, adverts, whatever),
intermingled with some fun stuff (I have a Youtube channel where I post slow-motion junk).

I'd really like to start making more shorts on my own
as (probably, in part, due to the DQ) I'm really itching to get better at this stuff
and it's more fun than probably any other hobby I do,
though it's definitely the most demanding.

How about the rest of you?
Professional video jockey? Computer nerd? Vanilla lay-person?

I work in industry making a mixture of ads, corporate videos and television shows (mostly post work, some on set post supervision work) and I am developing several feature projects, have produced a few shorts and music videos. We shot a pretty cool test shot this past weekend which we have been mulling over for ages which I now have quite a large amount of post work to do on... But like most people in industry I genuinely find myself far more stretched between the day job and personal commitments to pursue personal projects anywhere as much as I would like to, and I compete in the V48HOURS with a team of people who are all very much outside the industry because I very much do it for the fun of spending time doing something with them rather than a need to make something.

V48hours being finite and predictable? Tick.
V48hours being the only time I can get a whole crew together? Tick.
V48hours being something I do with friends who aren't trying to do this for the rest of the year? Tick.

One thing to note though... the deadlines thing mentioned above does work for your own stuff. But you need 2 of them. Set a firm start date for shooting. Set a firm completion date for delivery. Even if delivery only means Vimeo or YouTube, having those deadlines really helps. Even if it's not "perfect", trust me it's "finished".

My cameraman told me last year when he bought a new camera that we had to make 2 shorts before this year's V48hours. So we had the October Project and the February Project on the year planner. Didn't know what they were yet, but they were there.

The October Project became a short called 'solo' and was where I learned the 2 deadlines lesson. I had a shooting date but no finishing date. I tinkered (very occasionally - no pressure to finish) until February. Then suddenly had to finish it in order to shoot the next one.

Meanwhile the February Project, which was to be a road movie, got replaced by an Earth Hour film festival project. Still a second project. Still in February. Plus it had a delivery deadline. Bonus.

The Road-Movie-Formally-Known-As-The-February-Project is now scheduled for November. Accomodation booked. End of story.

Now all I have to do is figure out how to actually make something good. Not sure that there's a deadline applicable to that one. ;-)

We tend to make a couple of shorts a year, compete in the like of DVXfest, however it's going to be difficult this year, a few of our core team members are overseas a few are now in Australia, and one is making films in Vancouver, another core member is about to have a baby, so out of the 6 or 7 members that have been making films together for years there are really just two of us who are likely to have the free time required.

My goal this year is to rebuild the team somewhat and shoot another short during the year.

I had to direct, operate the camera, edit, and sometimes handle sound duties whilst trying to monitor the camera for this 48hours, and while things went pretty well I would rather shoot with more than a crew of 2.

Also I'd like to focus more on getting a decent script, often we just go off and shoot something half assed - and in 48hours style. Been 6 or 7 years since I attempted a proper well crafted short.

Was RyanM on the old forum.

If anyone handy to the North Shore of Auckland has a camera, a desire to be challenged with a small, fast moving and undirectable target, and absolutely nothing better to do for a few hours, I would love someone to shoot and/or edit and/or produce/direct a short doco of my dog playing/running at the park/in the bush with a paralysed leg and a leg-brace; partly to share the info with other inured-dog owners and the vet world who generally amputate for this injury, and partly to offer as a marketing blog item to the US firm who donated some of the parts for the leg brace.

I've been filming the dog regularly for 3 years for my own records...with the cheapest model of still camera, which is all I have. And I'm not even very good at that:).

I could do the sound recording/editing and voiceover though.

I really enjoyed the first half or so of that, Allan,
but it seemed to peter out after Isaiah "went missing".
I lost interest when the frame was almost 100% black for way too long
and there wasn't much else going on.

Masterful editing for the first half, though.

As an aside, I had a feeling of "oh please" with all the melodrama,
as almost everybody who enters wants to win the V48
so getting bent out of shape when you don't seems like poor sportsmanship.

I occasionally make short films as exemplars to show my students - usually to clarify the requirements of a task or brief. I've also entered a bunch of competitions as they provide good impetus to complete a task in a given timeframe. I have less free time now that I have a 4yo son (who is autistic and has various extra therapy stuff going on to develop communication).

Most recently I made this interview video about the book Mansfield with Monsters (launched 7th July, 2012) which my wife and I co-wrote with Katherine Mansfield:

Pretty basic, but still fun to make!

(I'm a high school Media Studies teacher, so strictly an amateur, but a keen one)

Nice!

Nice lighting on yourself,
but the lady in blue needed better backlighting.

I liked all the pick-up shots of the book,
and I liked the music.

Sounds like a crazy book, heh.

Thanks! It was our first go at playing with that sort of lighting setup, and it was (as you say) quite hit-and-miss. There was a lot of luck involved as I was the camera operator for both shots, and the only one in the room for my own take.

Nice effort from Sideways Productions, I enjoyed it.

I'm not sure how showing your disappointment is 'poor sportsmanship', it just shows that you are human.
