Heat 8 Auckland. The Sirens & the Harpy's Call.

So unless I was drunker than I thought - Half Shell Production entered two teams into their heat... and shot the same film from two perspectives?

Genius.

There must be a story here Brendan Udy... why was the first one dq'd?

2005 Team Sytec - Camp Akiliya
2006 Team Sytec - Malice in Wonderland
2007 Team Red Apple - Reservoir Cats

Not sure about genius, but here's how it came to be...

I was actually approached by the director of Guerilla Gorilla before the weekend about doing a crossover film, which I was initially on the fence about but come Friday night we decided to go for it.

Our two writing teams worked alongside each other on the shared scenes then went away and wrote the rest of the films themselves. Both teams then came together on Saturday morning and we both shot the same scene with our respective crews, sometimes shooting at the same time, otherwise doing pickups etc while the other crew planned their next shots.

It actually cost us quite a bit of time, and was kindof tricky since neither team had ever worked together before, but we got our respective shots and moved on to shoot the rest of our films.

I never saw their film before last night, so was a bit nervous beforehand to see how they came together. I don't think we pulled off the concept as well as it could have been done, and I'm pretty sure our film isn't as clear without theirs, but we tried something different and technically it worked.

Turns out they handed their film in late, hence the DQ.

Hope people got something out of the experience, not sure I would try it again anytime soon but I'd like to see others give it a crack someday. One team entering twice and shooting two crossover films might be the way to go.

Isn't there something in registration you have to tick saying this team is only entered once?

Yeah it was definitely that.

Thankfully we shot those scenes in a theatre where there was a lot of room to move around. Otherwise we would've struggled and lost a lot more time.

It was awesome seeing something new!

And for what it's worth, that's the first time I've seen half a film disqualified :D

Man, I've wanted to that for years. Even talked to Glynn of Bald Faced Cheek about a crossover once - got as far as "I'll call you on Friday night and see if we can make it happen" but think we abandoned the idea before the launch.

Made much better, of course, by pairing with a team from the same heat.

Whether there is or not, I don't know. But we were two separate teams who decided to collaborate, so it wouldn't matter. :)

Glad you liked it! We were somewhat trepidatious about it, but in the end we somehow pulled it off. The challenge was both fun and interesting. I don't think we'll do it again next year, though. Setting it up for two teams to shooting simultaneously ate up a heck of a lot of time.

This is one of those ideas we'd always talked about doing 'one day.'
So awesome to see two teams with the bones to step up and actually do it.

Just imagine if Frauleins did a crossover with Fractured Radius. Suddenly their very staid short is invaded by puppets, someone's head explodes in a spray of blood, everything enters an extreme slow motion, then boom it's back to whatever their short was doing to begin with. Dylz's short would be 6 mins long, mine would be 63 seconds.

I changed names from Ladies, oh ladies so we'd be shown in the same heat anyway, so everyone would see both shorts in quick succession. That's a big upside but the downside is I'd have to leave my house, and I quite like staying inside for the whole weekend.

Frauleins, oh frauleins

It was that golden moment 30 seconds into Half Shell's short (played second) when someone in the back row hissed loudly, "We've already seen this...."

'If you only see one movie this year - make sure it's yours!'
If you want a happy ending, that depends of course, where you stop your story

It's worth pointing out that Squidwig productions tried a variation of the 1 team 2 films move in Wellington in 2012. They split into two teams and made two overlapping films:

Nice work, apart from the 1 team instead of 2 aspect it's pretty similar to what we did.

Do you know if both films screened at the same heat? Either way, good on them for pulling it off.

Thanks Uther! Yeah, Squidwig did it - but we actually were 2 teams, we merged with Team Cupcake Go! and became Team Cupcake Squidwig and Team Cupcake Go! 6.9 for one year.

Was definitely the most challenging year we've had by a ton, mostly because we used just the one house as a base for both teams. What's more stressful than one room in a house devoted to editing? Two rooms in a house devoted to editing! Hahaha. Was a blast though :)

Oh yes and we did screen at the same heat, one after the other, which induced some audience chuckling when they figured it out :)
