Interesting, not only has One Shot done rather well this year, but it seems that in fact all of the new genres (with the apparent exception of Erotic Thriller) have inspired teams to do good work.

Poor old Action though; from the films I saw, a lot of teams have struggled to interpret that particular genre effectively.

Every single one of the one-shot films I saw were great. I think it really pushed teams to think outside the box :D

The other thing with One Shot is that it forces a much stronger focus on story at the writing/planning stages. You can't just fix your mistakes or pacing issues in post, and I think that leads to more creative solutions upfront.

I'm also a little disappointed with the lack of fun erotic thrillers as it seems like a genre which more teams should have had fun with. I get the feeling that the dearth of quality erotic thrillers happened because a lot of teams just couldn't find a girl who was actually willing to participate in one. As for one shot topping the genre listings... I think that while what nimble marmoset said about creative solutions is true, one shot also has the advantage of allowing teams to choose any of the other genres so they can pick the genre that they are most equipped for.

I disagree. Erotic thriller doesn't necessarily mean porn / anything more revealing than any other genre. In fact it had the potential to create some really interesting characters for actresses to sink their teeth into, without necessarily showing skin at all.

I do think Superhero was too easy an alternative, though. If it'd been Erotic Thriller or Inspirational, it might've been more balanced.

As it was there were only 2 erotic thrillers in CHCH (out of a possible 9), one of which was late.

I think ONE ROOM had a similarly high success rate, limiting teams and forcing them to not rely on tired techniques is always going to be a winner.

Every year we think about doing one shot - you can spend more time on story, rehearsal and shooting, and less on post production - which for us is the most time intensive part of the whole weekend.

True, although the flipside to this is that it gives you too many options, which is a different kind of challenge. In our brainstorming session this year we were almost paralysed by too much choice.

That happened to us, last year.

One Room + any genre = way too many potential stories and options.

Last year... was a learning experience.

Yeah I think you're right. We did Action this year and one thing we didn't want to do was go Tarantino styles because as soon as you pull out a fake gun it starts looking ludicrous.

With this in mind we just tried to do a satire on action tropes (we managed to work in "I'm too old for this sh*t" and "He was two days away from retirement" seamlessly - if you get action in future I recommend going down this road. The film comes off looking far more plausible (if I do say so myself).

Our action film has no explosions, a tiny bit of blood and no hard-violence to speak of, but I think it still comfortably sits as action.

Seeing only 1 Action across all finalists doesn't make me rate our chances highly of making the final though..seems the judges were looking for something and who knows if we nailed it?

Agreed. Having never made one myself, I can imagine it takes a lot of thought and skill to get it right without being too cliche, as well as having a cinematographer and editor who know how to put together a convincing action sequence that doesn't reveal any of the production without being too confusing and disorienting for the viewer. Agent Post is one of the best action films I've seen in this comp, but not one that can be replicated really

We received the genre erotic thriller/superhero and decided to amalgamate them. If not anything else, it was a lot of fun. Certainly wasn't easy trying to get the genre across though, maybe we didn't.. ha.

As I see it, the genre you are given will do one of two things, either a) tell you the style in which to tell your story, or b) tell you what type of story to tell. Personally I much prefer a), since you still retain more freedom to create a fresh narrative, just couched in the tropes and style of the genre. b) is harder, because it prescribes a more narrow band of opportunities.

For example, we pulled "Quest" last year, and struggled because the outline of the story seemed to be already written for us, and it was just a case of filling in the blanks. And I wonder if "Action" might be similar.

Was a bit jealous of the one-shot teams, what a cool "genre".

Another thing about one-shot success is that I'm thinking some teams, once they'd figured out what to do, might have had a simpler situation logistically with one set, long takes etc.

Of course I'm sure some teams realised the potential of a technical logistical nightmare with many retakes, elaborately hidden cuts etc but on the whole it might have been simpler.

I was waiting for someone to call me out on that. Instead of cliche I should have said "crappy looking with fake guns and bad effects". Which also describes Agent Post, I know, I know! I'll show myself out.

Ome shot also forces rehearsal upon you, I guess. I suspect that's often at the bottom of the priority pile during the shoot weekend!

I guess the thing about Agent Post that made it work was that it embraced cliche double-fistedly and resolutely ticked off all the cliche action-movie boxes, rather than making a film that happened to be a bit cliched by accident. It's the very definition of "nailing your genre".
