Filling up the screening room

I was looking back through the Taranaki screening room history today, and thinking "Man, out of at least 10-15 finalists every year most years and more entries, there are like 5 films uploaded".

I think small regions especially suffer from this as people seem to disengage fully from the comp once the heats are done, or finals if they're in them (hard to get reviews, not many people in the FB group or on forum, very few films get uploaded).

It feels like a real shame losing 75% of the films created each year because they all bring something interesting to the table, so maybe there's an alternative way to get them all to the screening room? City managers obviously end up with all the film files, and all of the credits. Maybe each city could have a 48 hours youtube account, and a group of volunteers could have access and upload the films that weren't finalists after city finals, and the rest once grand finalists announced?

I would very happily upload ~1-5 films to help make screening room a more complete archive, and I bet there's at least a few people in every city that would do that.

Thoughts?

Nice thoughts - we do have everyone's films but some teams don't want them uploaded. This year we are upgrading the screening room and we will look at whether we can help upload stuff once that has been sorted. :)

Fair enough I suppose, you could always make it a condition of entering, that it will be uploaded to screaming room via 48's YouTube channel. You have to agree to that kind of thing for other comps.

Or at least that all City finalists will be uploaded or something? Very exciting to hear about upgraded to screening room though and combination with reviews 🙂

CHCH currently has 31/92 films uploaded. The 15 finalists will take it to 46/92 if uploaded. Around 50% is about normal. It's low and disappointing that you don't get to see all the films made.

However, you can't force people to upload unless this was on online submission comp. I've always uploaded my films but I did have to pull one last year (that had been online for three years) at the request of a former team member. I did it reluctantly but sometimes circumstances change and my hand was kind of forced.

Personally, I do believe it should be up to the teams. It is their film so they should decide what ultimately happens to it post comp. As frustrating as it might be!

I agree - it has to be up to the teams. There's something to be said for films that are made to be screened at 48HOURS and 48HOURS only - it's an extreme reading of the ephemeral nature of the competition, but it's a valid one. There are also a lot of teams who don't want their films to be seen again - either at all, or in the state they submitted them in.

Reminds me of Dan Savage's Humpfest, which is a touring short pornographic film festival with many similarities to 48 (required elements, genres, time limits, etc). They literally destroy their copies of the films once the tour's over, which ensures the films never play outside that context. That's vital for the filmmakers in this instance, most of whom are ordinary folks whose reputations could be harmed by videos being put online without their say-so.

Am I sad that a number of my favourite 48HOURS films have disappeared into the ether? Absolutely. But that ain't my call to make.

Fair enough for the bulk of general films, but what about city finalists? Surely having a record of those would be worthwhile and people would be far less likely to want to never have people see those again?

Maybe it could be something like the city finalists are uploaded a week or a month after the comp if they're not already up & you can opt out of having yours go up for whatever reason. I feel like probably 80-90% of the finalists that don't end up online are due to laziness or forgetfulness by the team, but if you had a legit reason to not put it up you could just email your city manager.

Just added Mr Fluffy and the Robot to 2005. Not the greatest quality, but it is now there. I also have Rubix Dude and Wheelchair Mania from 2006 on DVD somewhere, but I accidentally put an SD card into the DVD slot in my Mac and can't get it out. Whoops!

I've finally gotten around to adding my 2006 and 2005 films to the screening room, they were on youtube but I just never got around to adding them to the screening room for whatever reason. They aren't the best films but I do remember the Ant really enjoyed our first film in 2005. Walked up to me after the screening shook my hand and said, "Nice gag ratio."
Never really understood why you would enter the 48 hours, make and submit a film and not want anyone to see it. I've got a film on my youtube which I don't really want people to see but I've got it up there anyway, maybe one day I'll be able to look back on it with a better light.

This is pretty much what I was thinking, like after grand finalists are out, city finalists that aren't grand finalists get a window of time to upload, then the back catalog gets completed by The City. Entry forms include a box to tick to opt out of having film uploaded if they're a finalist.

Actually I just realised I have 2006 and 7 to add to screening room too I think, I found the digitised files for them a few weeks ago and put on YT but not screening room. I shall practice what I preach and add them tomorrow!

So interesting to see the caliber of the films improve over time

Double check the spelling of your team name, and if unsure go and see how it's written in the reviews site, as that's how it will be in the database. A couple locally couldn't get their initial info to load because they were down as the singular version of their name rather than plural (I spotted difference in review site). Once you get to the next page you can correct the team name for screening room purposes if it's wrong.

Hope that helps! If still unsure let me know your team name and I can see if I can help :)
