Would agree that correlation is probably of academic interest only. There are absolutely both - 1) those films that do everything pretty well and might get a bunch of category nominations without somehow quite working as a whole and 2) those films that might not stand out in cinematography or editing or whatever but overall just work gangbusters - every year.

As for directors, I guess we're just aping the Oscars there, right? They seem to have decided that it is perfectly possible to have an outstanding film show up apparently directed by NO-ONE.

And I do apologise, misread the thread a little. Obviously the correlation between a screenwriting/directing nom and winning has been intrinsically linked in the comp for years. Can't remember a regional winner not being up for at least one of those, but would be trawling back through a lot of data for Wellington. Will try and see what I can find :)

Not to do with the predictions, but I always think genre breakdowns are fun. So in Christchurch we have:

3 Finalists:
Time Travel & Nature Run Amok
2 Finalists:
Opposites Attract
1 Finalist:
Gross Out/Cringe, Secret Identity, Holiday, Coming of Age, Buddy, Sci Fi & Musical
0 Finalists:
Wrong Place/Time, Generation Gap, Real Time

I also did the other two main regions:

Auckland:
4 Finalists:
Buddy
3 Finalists:
N/a
2 Finalists:
Gross-Out/Cringe, Secret Identity, Holiday, Real Time
1 Finalist:
Sci-Fi, Musical, Generation Gap
0 Finalists:
Opposites Attract, Wrong Place/Time, Time Travel, Nature Run Amok

Wellington:
3 Finalists:
Coming of Age, Musical
2 Finalists:
Gross-Out/Cringe, Real Time
1 Finalist:
Opposites Atract, Wrong Place/Time, Holiday, Time Travel, Generation Gap
0 Finalists:
Secret Identity, Buddy, Sci-Fi, Nature Run Amok.

So there you have it, take from this what you will. Wrong Place/Wrong Time is the least represented genre, with only 1 finalist (in Wellington) and Buddy, Gross-Out/Cringe & Musical/Dance all have 5.
Also, sorry I didn't have time to do the other regions, I know what it's like to feel like your region is left out in this comp & that wasn't my intention.

Also, as for Ultra

Auckland has 3/9 teams in the final,
Wellington has 4/7 in the final
Chch has 4/8 in the final
Dunedin has it's sole entrant in the final,
Taranaki has 2/3 in the final
& Gisborne had one signup but their finalists aren't on the city info page.

Taranaki has:

2 finalists:
Coming of age

1 finalist:
Opposites attract
Wrong place/wrong time
Sci fi
Nature run amok
Gross out
Musical
Time travel
Generation gap

Other notable statistics:
- 4/10 finalists are school teams
- 4/18 school teams that entered are finalists
- 6/8 adult teams that entered are finalists
- 7/10 finalists are repeat finalists, 7.5 if you count one team made up of some people who have been finalists before but rejigged a bit.
- 4/4 school team finalists are repeat finalists

Our one ultra that's not a finalist was DQ'd

*Statistics to the best of my knowledge are correct but don't quote me on it, lol.

Funny how Ruth proudly declared on the forum that no Ultras were DQ'd this year, when at least both Chch & Taranaki had DQ'd Ultras. I guess she meant none were DQ'd for not adhering to the elements, but still, does add to the narrative.

Yeah, ours was DQ'd for being a few mins late after they got there on time first but with the wrong stick. So not for not adhering to the elements.
