Hey everyone! Awesome night at EntX last night. It was nice to see the awards love shared quite widely around the teams, and special congrats to Snack To The Future for snagging the big one.

So let's talk about it! Overall impressions of the finalists? Any big surprises in the awards? What did you think of the venue? Who gave the best speech? How many 48HRS 2008 stickers did you get?

I thought the Hoyts venue was a great room, with just a single complaint - that aisle is really really really long and zig-zaggy for people coming down to collect a prize, even if they're not sitting at the back. This has always been a logistical challenge with the flow of the awards part of these events, although in that room it seemed to take even longer than usual.

Regarding the finalist films themselves, terrific line-up I thought, and really varied. Some great high concept premises too (even if some of the films didn't seem quite sure how best to use their awesome idea). I was going to complain about the alphabetical presentation order, except that it accidentally played very well in that order, so yay ("not accidental at all" - AJ).

And there was stiff competition this year for the coveted Best Use Of A Phone In An Acceptance Speech award. :)

Is it just me or was there way more red in people's films this year?

I think for next year as a region we just needa work a little bit on making sure all our films are in focus, we were all guilty of it, guys.

Overall, a good night & congratulations to all the winners.

The EntX is a cool venue - very modern but extremely cavernous so the intimacy is kind of lost. As such, it was hard to judge the audience reaction to some films. Not sure if teams got, for example, the volume of laughs they expected.

For me, this was the second time I've seen all of these films so obviously knowing what's coming I focus on at what engages/surprises me during a second viewing, how these finalist films match up against each other and what flaws are more obvious than they were at the Art Gallery.

I was pretty shocked that BORK!'s "Night Shift" didn't at least place. It's a really complete piece of work. I hope it gets picked up nationally.

I thought The Brothers Boyce "All Hallows Eve" was even better the second time through and I can't wait to see it again. I missed a lot the first time around and some of my misgivings I no longer care about! Really high replay value. Really unlucky not to place which I happily mentioned to Michael Wood as I left.

As usual, some of the judging decisions (even for nominees) leave you scratching your head a bit but again, you get that. All good.

You can't really fix the "time-it-takes-for-winners-to-get-to-the-front" unless you tell the winners to sit in the front rows prior. Not really in the spirit of things. Might ruin the suspense.

The sticker thing turned very aptly rather cringe. And, it took a very long time for the "winners" to get to the front. Kind of awkward.

Speeches ranged from one word, to stuttering-spluttering, to quite lovely from Phoebe Hurst.

And a couple of AJ things that made me chuckle:

1) AJ ducking down each time the nominees played. You're not that tall, mate.
2) Hearing AJ's "The Box" story again. Definitely needs to go in the "Finalist Bingo" for 2020.

Excellent to hear CHCH is producing so many reviews compared to the rest of the country. Does speak volumes about the community here.

Actually, I just remembered that a few years back Andrew had the city finalists submit some music from their film, to be played if their film won an award. And in addition to personalising the win a little more, it also served the very practical function of filling in the awkward the-audience-has-run-out-of-clap-but-the-winner-is-still-on-their-way silence. Bring that back next year please AJ!

I did this last year for the score/song award specifically, forgot about it this year until it was too late. But even then, music is still playing as people make their way to the stage.

I'm trying, I've become very sick with a flu. I think my body was doing me the honours of holding it off until as soon as the finals were over.

My body did this on shoot weekend, my partner was sick as from Tuesday and I started to feel it Friday night, but charged onwards through a weekend with little sleep, then on Monday I felt like I'd been hit by a bus and was bedridden for a few days. Interesting how your body can do that!

Really enjoying living vicariously through other cities' stories while I wait for Taranaki final, haha. Chch seem to have a great community with a lot of people engaging online 🙂

Surprised Night Shift didn't place, but then I've only seen screenshots and read reviews of things, haha.

It occurs to me that these newfangled cinema theatres with the fancy-pants laz-y-boy style seats and huge amounts of row-space in front create a bit of an illusion - specifically, that a full house in the room is actually a lot fewer people than you'd assume, since every individual takes up a lot more space. Additionally, the distance between people probably means that it's a bit harder for the energy of an audience to reach that magical critical mass moment where the whole room starts buzzing. Comparing the reactions of the films from Heat 8 that I saw, pretty much all the big laugh points of the films seemed more muted.

My legal team has actually advised me not to make any real or perceived critical comments about CHCH judges.

That said, the data tells us that Top 3 Auckland got in, Top 3 Wellington got in. 1 and 3 got in from CHCH and three others that didn't place but could/should have.

So, maybe certain non-partisan reviewers who attended all the heats were actually right with their initial impressions.

I put it down to ranked balloting and no in-person deliberation, which in combination is, pardon my Québécois, une idée idiote en tabarnak.

Yeah I'm also not sure that's the best strategy for this kind of thing given how subjective film is :). I will be interested to see what the non-placing Chch films that are finalists are like as I've heard a lot of good things about them.

Disclaimer: I know nothing about how the judging works, but I feel like a quick briefing on what makes a good film/use of the elements/story etc. would be a good start, then everyone scoring films on a bunch of criteria like how the elements are used, story, technical etc. etc., and tallying it all up, then looking at the order of films and discussing in person (or video call) anything that seems out of sorts until everyone agrees on the final lineup/awards would be good.

I'm personally of the opinion that it shouldn't be about which films incorporate which judging criteria the best, and that it should be more holistic than that. Films shouldn't be made to tick boxes. On the other hand, 48HOURS is a pretty specific competition, so it probably has to do that to a degree. Maybe when picking finalists. Picking winners, though, I feel you have to go for the best short rather than the one that plays the "game" the smartest.

The main reason for deliberation, to me, is for judges to make their cases for the films they liked where other judges might have missed something. A bunch of opinions separately don't mean shit when judging art, but a conversation will usually come to an actual decision that means something. Also, with ranked balloting, a film that gets 50% first-place votes and 50% last-place votes will place lower than a film that everyone ranked, like, slightly above the middle, which feels stupid to me.

Obviously though, for international judging it's just going to have to be some kind of ranking system, because you're never going to coordinate all those busy people across all those time zones.

Not sure how much of this is too inside-baseball for the forums but whatever.

Yeah, I agree with what you've said about all of that, especially the deliberation bit. That to me seems key for judging something so subjective, there are parts of all films one person would miss/not notice subtleties about, especially for winners.
