2014? What do we want from the comp?

The time has come ladies and gents, to put on our thinking caps and dream about what we want from the comp.

I'm keen for some classic genres- heist, western, revenge, slapstick, and film noir

I'd also like it to be stormy, none of this good weather rubbish. I want wind and rain.
OR
I'd like it in early April and the weather to be stunning.

Ideas people?

Last year was run pretty smoothly! Hard to think of improvements. Let's see...

I also want Big Bang and Fuzz back.

1. Ah, that reminds me. No pre-recorded music.

2. Rules pages tidied up a bit. Trying to locate rules amongst the web pages can be tricky. A "this has changed from last year" summary for returners.

3. No genre dodgers, illegal sample users etc in the prize rounds

Ummm...

4. Maybe a better / higher data rate codec submit option. Not 4k just yet though :-) ??

Starting to nit-pick. Last year was pretty well done. And +1 to bring back One Take.

I think that films that present a strong example of the genre should be rewarded.

One that nods in the direction of the genre should be taken with a larger grain of salt.

Having said that, with genres like One Shot (which I thought was awesomely done) are either spot on or not. In these cases its how well they work the exploit the genre for the maximum effect, which in essence is what I mean with a 'strong example.'

TOTALLY agree that the rules page needs a massive tidy up. This has been mentioned on here for the last couple of years....

This industry and forums like this are littered with condescending elitist nob cheeses like you aren't they?

Looking forward to seeing your amazing film this year.

Since our 48 hour comp has turned into a 49 hour one, what's the bet on a 'time travel' genre this year?

Or would this be considered a 'Big Twist'?

Time travel would be quite a nice idea for a short film. I think that would produce some pretty interesting films. I've always toyed with the idea of paradoxial film.

We've seen time travel in the comp before. It was alright. Seems like everything is alright, really.

Has there ever been a truly bad genre? Like, one which no one could build something good from?

I know most people claim to fear musical, but there have been some really good musicals.

I'm most worried about genres that dictate particular props/costumes. (Like steampunk would.)

I guess the reason people fear musical is that it places more weight on the music being just as important as the actual film. With just 48 hours you almost have to run the 2 creative processes parallel.

Having said that, there are definitely some really good ones that have been made in times gone by. Also, I guess there's a certain expectation when you think of a musical as being quite big and extravagant, but sometimes really simple music can work best.

Definitely agree with you on your point about prop dictated genres. Steampunk would require a lot of attention to detail in the props to portray the genre well. Would really like to see if it could be done though! :)

I didn't see any decent Grindhouse from a few years ago. Can anyone think of one I should check out?

I do agree with you though- the genre doesn't matter, unless it has unique demands (like period drama would).

If 'Shakespeare' was a genre you could always simply modernise it.

Although, I do 'fear' musical for the reason that Linden suggests- it places so much emphasis on that one component. But hey ho, if I get it, I get it and just have to do the hard yards and make it a kick-ass one.

Shakespeare would be good, just thinking back to the old Dicaprio Romeo and Juliet; was a nice twist on an classic story.

Getting music to fit with film can be tricky at times, especially if your actors are part of the music.

When I made this 1 minute film last year, I was constantly tempo changing my music and going back and forth between my FCP project and my Logic music file, making edits, rerecording and rearranging things so that they fit together.

One thing that could be interesting which would be along the lines of the shakespere thing would be if they had like "adaption"
You could get maybe 10 or so authors to allow one of their short stories to be put into the mix and you have to pick one of them and adapt it into a short film in 48 hours.
I'm not entirely sure I would want to get it myself but I can see how it could be an interesting challenge.

Oooh, like a Witi Ihimaera category.

I've heard that Stephen King offers some of his stories very cheap ($1 is the number in my head) to new film makers. I could be wrong on this, but it rings a bell. Imagine the 'Stephen King' genre!

I think adapted Shakespeare would be awesome!

I forgot about Grindhouse. What a shock that saying "make a self-consciously shitty movie" leads to people making shitty movies.

"Shakespeare" (or even Shakespearean) is a fantastic suggestion, don't remember that one coming up before. Figure out iambic pentameter and away you go.

For school entries, do they receive the same genres as everyone else? I don't imagine school groups would be given a genre like Grindhouse?

Next year they should do '48 Hours Masters' where 8 or so well known Directors from around the globe compete only against each other. They all get the same genre and get some really hairy elements to work with. No prizes, just glory.
