Amazingly high calibre of shorts, Auckland has stepped it up yet again. Any previous year it would be almost unimaginable that Lense Flare's ground-breaking short wouldn't win, and yet this year it didn't even come second. The rest of the country won't know what hit them in the nationals.

Man!! That was an awesome night!! What a crazy good line up of films... the judges must have had a super tough time. Asylum absolutely nailed it with their ridiculously perfect film. Grand Cheval, Hybrid Motion Pictures and Lense Flare we're amazing as always... is anyone else talking about the house fire in Lense Flare's film? A goddamn real house fire!! Amazing!! And the rest of the films... all outstanding... some truly original and awesome films. Congrats to everyone.
We're thrilled to have walked away with 1st place and Best Animated Film... it was a amazing and genuine surprise.

I guess I put myself on the spot.

I think there were 7 or 8 last year which was bonkers, and should never be allowed to repeat. But I'm pretty confident about maybe 5 this year.

Seriously though, when you see that Lense Flare short your jaw will fucking drop. I couldn't help but start swearing, right in the middle of it. Because holy fucking shit how the fucking fuck.

And Mukpuddy's short is the best I've ever seen them turn out - and just look at their form to see how crazy that is. They've proven themselves to be an absolute monster team and this year that monster has big sharp claws and long pointy teeth.

I don't have a problem with this - if they're better films than the rest of the regions then so be it. The old system with only the city winner making it(outside of Wildcards) was pretty tough.

I couldn't help but start swearing, right in the middle of it. Because holy fucking shit how the fucking fuck.

Ha, ha! Sounds awesome! Expectations are high!

i know it's been said but i have to reiterate: ho.ly.shit. that was absolutely the strongest bunch of 48hours films that i've ever seen in one session.

to the point where i feel absurdly humbled for our film to have played amongst them.

when flicker played i was convinced there was no way any film could top it but mukpuddy really blew my face of with how awesome their film was.

we were happy with the reaction of our musical, and then lens flare's started playing immediately after and i just thought "you fucking bastards!" no idea how they pulled it off. and then grand cheval as well!! what the actual fuck?! how good was that? all four of those films will go down as 48hours masterpieces in my opinion. zero hyperbole.

ugh. you're all way too talented and i am really honestly genuinely humbled.

Agreed, that was terrible.

I wish there were more wildcards if anything. So some luminaries (not more from fucking PJ!) got to choose from the entire pool, with no second-guessing.

I don't know how the shorts are selected for the grand final, but if it's a committee (and it feels like it is) then that might explain a few things.

Expectations are high!

Yeah there are shortcomings elsewhere in that film, which is probably why it didn't win Auckland, but man that is some impact.

Just a girl, and a boy, and a boy, and a boy...

Yeah honestly I thought they didn't have it in them, and that Chumpers was a one-off. It was a very half-arsed short in retrospect IMO, and they got lucky. But Mandarena proves they really do have serious chops.

How weird was it to have two Spanish language shorts though? Talk about synchronicity.

Can anyone who saw their heat say if those audio dropouts were only in the final? Without that technical problem it might have been my favourite short of the night, or at least top two (Mukpuddy was fantastic), but with that fault it drops way down in my estimation.

Cheers all for the positive responses to Grand Cheval's film. I unfortunately missed the second half of the final, but my mind was blown enough by that first half. Didn't really recover from film-envy after that start with ADHDMI and Flicker, so good. I have no doubt what followed was as amazing as I've heard from everyone. Lense Flare, Mukpuddy, Hybrid Motion; the old foes killing it once again I hear.

Yeah Morgan, we were pretty fresh faced with that Chumpers, still proud of that little film though. But yes we certainly have had a lot to learn in the language of cinema and a lot to learn about our tools and equipment, to try conquer that second album syndrome.

That sound issue was a technical problem only on the night. Didn't exist in the heats, and from what I gather the judges saw a version without that issue. If it was going to happen to any film I'm glad it happened to the one with subtitles ha.

Don't get me wrong, Chumpers was charming as fuck, I just thought that possibly charm was the only thing you had. You've proved that's not true. Great work.

Having worked with Tom and the Grand Cheval guys a couple of years ago, I have nothing but positive words for them. I certainly think they deserve recognition in pushing the boundaries of film making.

I haven't seen the latest 48 Hour offering as yet, but have no doubt it is a work of genius with Tom at the helm.

Hoping to work with you guys again someday soon and congratulations on keeping the excitement in this competition alive!
