If the audience votes are a pain to count, what about giving the team leaders an email with link embedded, letting them go in and vote via the website?

The biggest negatives would be only one vote per team, as opposed to one per person at the heat.

But if you asked them to give out perhaps a 1st to 5th placing, you'd get a fair result.
Plus you'll avoid teams voting for themselves.

Thoughts?

DSLR cameras (the 7D at least) have a tendancy to appear darker on the LCD screen than they do in the final product, and as a result of such we are seeing A LOT of overexposed films this year.

FWIW I'm pretty sure the projection was a little over-exposed for our heat at least. Not hugely so, but some of the brighter areas were clipping out a bit.

But colour on DSLRs is really hard. They are very contrasty and highly saturated for the most part.

I went to your heat, two reasons really, to watch Goodfellas because although no-one will admit it they're always the benchmark and every team wants to see what they have to compete with, and secondly they are in the same heat as last years winners Grand Cheval who are now serious contenders in the same class as the great older-teams just like that!. They went head to head with maybe one more film considering and then your film played. Spoke to some people after the screening and yours definately deserved to be placed up there. Great acting by the leads, especially the male and nicely shot, a couple of shots I thought weren't framed properly, but the acting suffced and great post sound. A definate to be watched out for in the future.

They have a certain style which they bring to their films. I have no problem with it, it's the humour they are comfortable with and works to the strength of their cast. They manage to create unique and interesting stories every year even if they are interpreted through the same filter each time.

Many teams are the same - not least of which us. We have a specific absurdest humour that we favour, and Andy always brings a wacky accent. Those things are constants, but we try to at least use them in different ways each year.

Dylan's right. Their style of humor and timing is what appeals to me... I wouldn't want that to change. It's served them well... and it's why they deserve the success they are experiencing. If it was the same story every year... that would be different, but it isn't. You can't expect someone to change what comes natural to them. I always intend to write something tonally different depending on genre... but what I know always seeps through and people always recognise it as the "Mukpuddy style" whether they are saying it in a good way or not. I'm happy with that. A "style" is better than none at all.

Except for those jerks who always animate their "actors"... c'mon guys... change it up a bit ;)

It's a tricky subject....our team generally has enough different and new members (especially this year) that we feel comfortable trying something different each year, especially the last three years. But on the other hand, if something is working for you, why change it? But then on the 'other' other hand, you don't want to slip into a Deppburtonian rut of creativity and become predictable in style if not content.

I think it really depends on the individual teams and what they want to get out of the contest... Do they want to have a good time with their mates, practice and expand their craft or refine a particular style? All are equally valid.

Thats a bit like people who hate on Wes Anderson.
You can't knock people because they have a signature style that works for them.
It might not be a style you like but others do and its not what they're comfortable with, I'm guessing it's because they genuinely like what they create!

Tim Burton would be well and truly out of a job if a he needed to create films with a different style.
Kubrick would have a career, but Tarantino wouldn't.

Do what works for you.
Make films that appeal to you,
If its a style that others like, brill, if not, make them anyway.

Cheers, yeah I was stoked to see we were in a heat with Goodfellas, Grand Cheval and Halcyon. Was a fairly strong heat all round, and it feels great to be up there with the best in the heat. Agree with you on some of the shots not quite being right, guess that's what happens when pressure mounts. Something to take forward to next year!

I say ditch audience favorites. It is never a true accurate measure of the films, it is always flavored with personal bias, team stacking, and strategic voting. And the comments about the pro teams rising to the fore ... I have to disagree with that as I think some teams are discounted because they are more organized than others. If you want audience favorites to work then you need to have a large audience so that it can't be so severely influenced by biased viewers.
