Congrats to Toe Jam, was the slickest film of the night I thought. BFC's film was also well polished and likely to be very polarising. MC Coincidental was classic.

Some of my favourite quotes from last night:

Aaaaachu's Bushwacked: "I'ma kill it! I've got its knife!" (this film is listed in the reviews database under heat 2, but it was actually in heat 3)

Bald Faced Cheek's Choir in the Blood: "It's lucky for these lyrics that I have some frozen pork!"

Toe Jam Productions' Bad Rock: "Lovely tomato, fresh avocado!"

Not to be a nuisance or anything, but was 'Porn Film : Untitled' not "too sexy"?? I enjoyed watching the movie, and laughed throughout it, but could see many people feeling uncomfortable with some of the scenes.

Yes there should have been a warning for the youngsters about some of the content but unfortunately we didn't have enough time to review all the shorts before screening. We usually give a heads up about iffy content and will be on to this at future screenings.

Perhaps a way to help that in future is to have a check box in the online wrap up that the teams could indicate to the organizers that their film contains certain possible viewer warning elements..
that way only those would have to be checked out by the organisers leaving them free to do other things..
Also that way you could possibly have a heat that was definately R16 should there be the need...

Then that would take away the element of surprise when you sit down and watch the films? The feel I get from V48 is that any thing could happen. Having the heats restricted to R16 would take away those aspiring young-ones.

If you see this as a problem, consider arranging the Heats into age groups. But then that would be disappointing.. I liked knowing the fact that we had a better film than some of the teams that were 20y/o+ and experienced

But that's just my two cents.

The surprize element should be in the imagination of the film maker and not in the level or degree of violence/sex/language..
While i don't condone censorship, in fact i'm very anti it (okay there are limits) events like this, and in many ways I'd prefer the title of event rather than competition, rely on the goodwill of the public and the sponsors..

last year my film had a fair degree of bad language.. Well what could be considered bad language but it was there deliberately to give Jesus a charactor in keeping with the plot line, had I not used it the story would have fallen on its face..
This year i had crime, in this years story even though there is a fight scene and the main charactor has a criminal past there isn't so much as a " golly gosh darn" throughout the whole film, not one..
it wasn't required and had it been put in it would have just been for the sake of it..

I don't envy Ants position, have to keep a balancing act between keeping the likes of the creative minds in here happy with as few restrictions as possible and also the fickle world of public and corporate support to keep this going and growing

My last word on the matter, make his and all the organizers life just a little easier, if language is required, then use it, if it's not then don't.. If you start any film you make with the emphasis on shock tactics you'll never be anything else or grow in any way..
Creativity is about versatility and has nothing to do with censorship.. Just letting the organizers know they could be sailing close to the line showing any film that might break the NZ censorship Laws is having a little concern for them as they're the ones publicly showing the film and therefore carrying the can..

I'd like to think that the surprize any audience member will get from my films is not knowing what to expect in the way i approach the subject rather than the level of R rating i can squeeze into it..
Hence my absolute delight in what the Coen bros achieve..

Hear hear.

I often feel awkward with films made by my team in that they contain what I consider to be unnecessary bad language. I was almost surprised that this years didn't contain bad language.

But since it's the film that sparked this whole discussion off, I guess I can't really feel too much satisfaction.

Honestly, I wasn't comfortable with the content in it right from the start - but I'm not writer or director...

As the director of "Porn Film; Untitled", I would happily support selecting an element in the Online Wrap-up that identifies a film as having mature content.

(For the record, our film featured bare male buttocks for humour value; a graphic, albeit stick figure, animation; sexual humour and implied sexual content. There were no genitals or actual frontal nudity involved. I would also point out that it's not actually a porn film, but a comedy about idiots making a porn film. )

In any event, in the same Heat as our film, I saw: (a) a graphic, bloody murder by machete; (b) a graphic, bloody murder by chainsaw; (c) a dozen or so people shot to death, with blood; (d) a disfigured corpse, with a dozen knife wounds; (e) an implied beatdown of an unarmed child, by other children wielding bats; (f) a few attempted suicides; (g) a garroting; (h) a knifing; and (i) at least one bitchslapping.

Some of these were in the films made by the younger teams.

When it comes to issues of censorship, why does violence always catch a pass, while beautiful, loving relations between consenting adults must be hidden away? ;)

2004 - The House of Raging Women (Educational - Director/editor)

Well said! It's like American TV where extreme violence is ok but sexuality isn't. But like you said maybe there needs to be some sort of warning as young really young kids in the audience still shouldn't be exposed to either violence or sex like that.

A heads up in the wrap up form, so organizers can give the audience a heads up, I think is the best bet in terms of content. Not for censorship, or splitting things up into differently 'rated' heats, but simply having Ant be able to say

"Ok, this next one has been flagged as adult only by the team that entered it - if you have sensitive little un's, you might want to skip it."

Would avert most problems.
