"Hoa" means friend, companion, partner, or ally :)

What a treat it is to be the first to review the 'king of reviews' film!

This was really sweet and cute. The 1995 setting is awesome, and made for some great costumes and character designs! The film felt like low budget kiwi version of Stranger Things, and I think the concept is SO solid and could be expanded upon easily.

However, there's some really unique technical issues with this one. I have the inside scoop that there was a big computer issue over the weekend, so maybe this one just didn't get the polish it deserved.

Im not gonna tell someone with over 1400 reviews (probably more from the old website 🫡 Thank you for your service) what they should do differently. Its all part of the competition.

I was delighted to see the taniwha hand pop up!! I would love to see more of that!

Keep it up Steelpotato 2.0

Each year I wait with baited breath to see the creation of the man the myth the review legend himself. And this year was another treat.
I love the vibes this film brings from the first moments which harken back to the breakfast club as unlikely allies find themselves thrust into an adventure. The choice of music hit me perfectly with its retro synth stylings. Top choice in my books taking us right into Goonies territories.
Also... is this the best POO IN ALL OF 48HOURS history? That viscosity - please send me the recipe coz it was delightedly disgusting.
Watching the friendship blossom over the course of the film was exactly what it felt like to be young again with the whole world ahead of you. Finishing on another great synth choice during sunset pulling the final nostalgia string and placing me inside the Karate kid feeling of optimism and youthful exuberance.
In short every choice the film-makers did hit the right buttons for me and did what many other films fall short on... atmosphere and feeling. SPOT ON:)

Well well well. The great and mythical SteelPotato, a man without whom generations of filmmakers would struggle to interpret their own, and others', works.

I absolutely love that you've once again utilised young talent. Brilliant choices as the main actors, great performances and a fun dynamic. I agree with Buddy that it definitely has a stranger thing vibe, but also any number of 80s classics - Stand By Me coming to mind in particular.

There is some absolutely outstanding (I'm assuming) ADR on display here. The dialogue is crystal clear and the lipsync is absolutely frame-perfect. Love the return of the jacket and the completely over-the-top and unnecessary Glaswegian accent absolutely and continually cracked me up.
The colour grading was another high point - beautiful, however could have been assisted by a little more key lighting perhaps to lift and lighten those shadows. I also would have loved to have experienced a little more cohesiveness and through-line with the music. Finding good in and out points so the track can seamlessly drift into the next scene, lingering while wrapping up those emotional beats could have helped glue some things together.

Barnstormer of a story, so retro, and the lo-fi costuming at the end was fantastic and came as a welcome surprise.

You are a legend, Dave. Never change.

Great job on this Dave! Loved the vibes here and felt the grade was really awesome. Definitely loved the score as well. Really nice to have a 48 brave enough to try create their own music :)

The "kids run around town" genre is a staple of 48 hours, ripe for insanity. Teams embracing this genre have reminded me of Trainspotting, Reservoir dogs, all the classics, but this one...
This reminds me of Tetsuo the Iron Man; an obscure cult horror film from Japan.
It's clear that this team is lead by a real cinephile, so I desperately hope the influence was intentional!

The visual storytelling was a real weak point; often the camera was stationary during chase sequences, or we would be dealing with bread and butter shot/reverse shot. It's all quite workmanlike, though the grade began to stand out during the beach sequence.

Overall, a solid 48 hours movie!
Looking forward to seeing what they make next!

“Eggy Hoas” is an absolute BLAST to watch & I was lucky enough to see it on the big screen!!🤩
Man where do I even start?! Actors? BRILLIANT. Had me in hysterics 😂 The Story? LOVED. It’s wacky, totally original and keeps you on your toes which is so hard to do these days! 🔥 The framing, colour grading and Music were so incredibly well done - they all added such a sick vibe to a film that perfectly captures the essence of 48hrs! 🙌🎬

Freaking amazing job team!!

Ps The Taniwha hand prop was super cool 😂

Ah, so nice to see another film from The Man, The Myth, The Legend--steelpotato 🥔! I loved the '90s vibe in this one for sure, everything from the mini backpacks to the guy's tracksuit, haha. And what a great cast you had! Always cool seeing you use talented young folk, and the Scottish fella really topped it off with some good contrast!

You always do a great job of selecting visually interesting locations and dynamic lighting, making for a nice cinematic feel. The twilight slow-mo shot at the end was particularly satisfying for me!

The buddy vibe was great! It's a nice change to see a buddy story played out by people who have to introduce themselves to each other at the beginning, but are quickly brought together by a common foe. It was also fun that it had cat & mouse and action & adventure vibes ☺️

Your intro text about the Taniwha hunters club meeting, right after mums 'n' bubs' gave me an actual lol and is probably one of my favorite little random things of the films I've watched so far. I dunno why, just fun and really set the scene for the film to come, haha.

Others have already mentioned these, but I'll give a shout-out for them as well: excellent ADR, fantastic poop 💩, and delightful taniwha hand! Also Dave did a great job with the color grade, gives the film a really unified look throughout.

All in all a very fun buddy film that had me reminiscing about the 90s. I hope we can bring "Shame on your undies" back into the common vernacular, because, come on, what a gem of a diss! One of the many things I miss from the 90s 😅
