What is in the box....

This was quite long!

I really enjoyed the impressive cinematography in this one! every shot is really nice to look at, and both your leads are great actors!

A thing to work on would probably be your story. this film felt more like a moment in time than anything else. we were sort of dropped into the middle of the action, and it felt like we were pulled out before the story finished.

But overall, this was quite good, and I can't wait to see what else this team comes up with!

Probably one of the all round technically strongest films of the Ōtautahi heats. Looked and sounded great from start to finish. I was anticipating a gag reveal so I'm glad they left it ambiguous. Great effort team.

YO where did THIS come from?? Some really stunning setups here! In a competition filled with ugly ugly car interiors, Sons of the Broadmeadow really showed how it’s DONE! Was a projector used for the driving scenes?? Either way, it kept me locked in as I eagerly awaited the next big thing…and then…it never came. I was loving the bogan actors! Just the way the driver kept saying.''nah, not the glove box" is SO FUNNY TO ME!! The car crash sound was a real shame, and i have real mixed feeling on the use of the mini cop car, which could have looked seamless if it was slightly out of focus? Maybe the miniature should have been a wrecked car? BOLD use of title at the end! Maybe less is more in this case, but I feel like these filmmakers still have some juice in the tank. Would love to see more of this! This was a real breakout for me this year. Another team I would LOVE to collab with. Hit me up! Keep it up team.

I'm not sure I've seen a nighttime drone shot before. I like. As others have commented, some good cinematography in this.

The escalating dynamic between the two main characters is great fun. This film is delightfully absurd.

I miss the shot of the polaroids on my first viewing of this film so I am very confused. Now that I've rewatched, I'm not confused, but my imagination hasn't managed to fill the gaps of what image could be so precious to the protagonist yet so shocking to the policeman.

Cheers for the reviews all!

We are going to take a break from the 48hours for awhile.
While we would of liked a stronger film to go out on, we still had a great time
making them all. All the best for your films this year and going forward :)

In the midst of their getaway, a couple of criminals fight over opening the glove box...

This film was just so expertly pulled together! The shots, lighting, sound, performances were all fantastic! I loved how natural the banter and arguments flowed between the two criminals, and leaving the audience on tenterhooks over exactly WHAT was in the glovebox was brilliant. I really enjoyed the fact that we didn't get to know what was in the polaroids, although it may have been good to see something in them rather than black, to insinuate something that may help the audience's imagination.

One suggestion I might add to this, which I believe has already been noted by other reviewers, but it's literally the only thing I think that held you back from being city finalists this year, which was the story. We were dropped into the middle of the action (which I ALWAYS love when we immediately get thrown into a film like that), but considering your short run time, the film may have benefited a little more from learning more about these characters - what did they do before we see them in the car? What's their motives, their choices that led them to this situation? Learning a little more about why the driver had locked the polaroids in the glove box - or at the very least, giving a little more nuggets of information that really just enables the audience's imaginations to run wild!

Overall, this film was an absolute winner! Creativesmith, I'm sorry to hear you're going to be taking a break from 48Hours for a while! You and your team have a whole heap of talent here, and I look forward to your eventual return to the competition!

Great looking film and these small “moment in time” films are often my favourite. Very self-contained and simple given it’s just an exchange between two “mates” in a car.

Take it or Leave it:
At first I thought this is going to be pretty intense, but the dialogue and delivery didn’t really pull it off. It was just a lot of back and forth about the same thing. The glovebox denial needed more time to breathe, more time to pass. Opportunities/attempts to get in there, trust and loyalty to develop and be tested. If you’d done that, I think this would have been a brilliant film that could have taken out CHCH. Alas, not to be! While the contents of the Polaroids were obviously horrific the cops reaction seemed a bit too dramatic – slumping against the wall in shock. I think a very slow shot of him just crouching down, head bowed, stunned, might have spoke louder volumes.

Final thoughts:
I do like this a lot give the simple idea behind it. It’s a really good attempt at less is more; but it unfortunately feels like it needed another scene or two. Going to miss you guys!

Whaaaattt - no more Sons of the Broadmeadow?? So sad! We wish you well - and hope you come back again one day!

A beautifully shot little story. Possibly our favourite drone shot this year - one with a story purpose! Well done.

Great lighting, great performances, great cinematography - great, great, great.

And then the story hahahaha

Honestly, we don’t think it needs too much more to get it across the line. The biggest drawbacks from the judges were just two things. Firstly, genre: yes, they’re “being chased,” but the story isn’t really about that, so judges said no no no.

Secondly, that ending with the polaroids really weirded us out - and the judges too. Everyone we’ve discussed this film with seems to think those pictures are of uh...victims, to put it mildly, and we’re just not convinced that’s what you were going for. And if it was… uhhhh, no thanks, hahaha. So yeah, perhaps the reveal in that glovebox could have just been something really silly instead - like a collection of Pokémon cards, or a Spice Girls album, or anything other than a secret polaroid stash that we only get to see a policemen gag over...

THE BEST THING: You have a real sharpshooter on this team - we envy their talent.

THE NEXT THING: Don’t stay gone too long! We’ll miss you!
