The Bad Tasting Hero

by The Immortal Think Tank

A story book animation about a mining town who digs too deep.

Illustrations by Che Crawford (@TheImmortalThinkTank), and Matthew Wills (@Swordscomic).

This film was fully animated in moho animation by Che. Every character and asset was rigged and animated, and every scene was made up of 2D assets layered on a 3D plane, so the camera could be panned through the story assets. The illustrations were all given a paper texture and flat shadows to make it appear like they were being puppeted across the page by a hand, but it's entirely animation.

Matthew Hennessey (@Naircol) wrote his original composition "The Sticky Janitor" around the narration and the story flow.

Ford Saunders edied the film in DaVinci, adding in page turns etc to give the whole film an animated storybook feel.

Very well polished animation. A smart use of puppet animation to create a story book feel. The colours and designs were beautiful and the rhyming narrative was entertaining

WOAH WOAH WOAH. Beautiful animation and a galloping story told with wit, intrigue, suspense and rhyme.
It looks effortless how beautiful everything is on screen, yet you can see there's real work gone in to making every frame full of rich textures and depth.
Amongst the incredible animations this year this is easily in the top their IMO

This was such a joy to watch. Personally as a big fan of DND the entire premise being based around mimics instantly had my attention and the quality of the story mixed with the wonderfully wholesome storybook aspect made this film my personal audience fav vote!

A truly fantasting story about compassion with plenty of laughter and intrigue into the titular "Bad tasting Hero" and how they saved the day their way.

Believe it or not I go waaaay back with D&D; my dad started in the late 70s and I quickly learned to love the lore of Gary Gygax and this fantastical roleplay spirit is embedded in a rich animation here that plays out like an exceptionally high quality children's book full of monsters, mimics and heroes.

Appreciate the team leaving some technical info about how they made the film as I was impressed! Opening with a very cool shot that was as close to a dolly zoom as possible the colourful incredibly well drawn world quickly comes to life.

For the film itself I think this was really solid in terms of plot progression, a Diablo-esque soundtrack driving proceedings as a town digs too deep down a min and awakens a threat, leading to some fairly deep themes of sacrifice and heroism plus a neat surprise at the end. The script was very clever indeed and the eloquent figures of speech impressed me a lot.

I liked that how you animated gave the film a point of difference, remaining seared in my brain with how strong the images were and really honing on on the old school puppet show presentation.

The only thing I ponder about is that the stylistic choices did lead a little bit to feeliny talked at rather than engaged with fully as a viewer of the film, but it all made sense with the end reveal.

Really enjoyed the film and hope to see more from The Immortal Think Tank!

I've just updated our youtube file to exclude our credits so my children's names are left offline etc :) Unfortunately I can't replace the file there with a new version that has different credits. But I've written the credits here, too, under the video :)
