What a clever subversion of the "GPT". Very well done with with many relatable moments and a fresh approach to what could have been a cringe and cliched, albeit topical, moment in our lifetime.
This film looks and sounds great.
This is the best script in the competition from Wellington in 2025 hands down, with only Comica coming close, and was absolutely robbed of the award at the regional final. This might be a freezing cold take but I have spoken to several competition veterans and we almost all unanimously agree that dialogue driven films should probably be coming out on top in this category compared to films with minimal dialogue. I know for a fact that judges aren't being given copies of scripts to compare so make it make sense!
Anyway I absolutely loved GPT by Nutty Mosquitoes, which offered a fresh take on a very relevant pop culture subject right now, but gave it such an original spin that it elevated the film completely and had my partner and I laughing maybe harder than any other film in this year's comp.
The colour play is so good here. Clean Sunday best whites contrasted with strong baby blues set the heavenly scene immediately, whilst the universal thick rimmed glasses and suspender of all employees provided a collective uniformity, cleverly given breathing room by distinctive body shapes and hairstyles. Fantastic direction in that regard.
From here we get into the good stuff. The titular "G.P.T" and the team goes to work, bringing us in like fish on a hook and an obnoxious customer revealing that they have got us hook, line and sinker in terms of story engagement. All driven by a KJ Apa lookalike boss who had the best comedic timing in the whole film (which is saying a lot)
One more thing to shower with praise. The sound and soundtrack! Consistent and ethereal producing a tonal dreamlike mis en scene that complimented the film perfectly. And given the dialogue was key whoever was on sound recording absolutely knocked it out of the park.
As I mentioned to the team at the final last night (lovely to meet you!) the ONE THING holding this film back that could have catapulted it even higher would have been a little bit more dynamism whether that was visually or in terms of movement. Because ultimately it is centered around sitting down and talking, and whilst it is damn good at what it does perhaps something visual to raise the stakes even more could have got you there. I'm not talking John Wick, I'm not even saying reveal your hand on the key phone conversation. But maybe camera movement or an even closer up shot on the stressed employee could have done it? This is just me nitpicking.
Personal choice almost maybe the setting could have had just ever so slightly more visual texture? But you nailed what you shot. Great work and sorry for the delayed review!
The GPT acronym is super clever and you guys have really nailed a great tension that liminal shows like Servence produce. The dolly shots in this are also no small feat! They look great and I can imagine that eating up a bit of time... You really pulled it off with no sacrifices to the film. I saw an early preview, then at the heats, and it was so great to see with a full audiences at the regionals. Massive congrats NM!
What a clever, funny, and beautiful constructed film!! Absolutely the best mixture of shot lovely, executed perfectly, written and edited excellently and performed beautifully! Had me laughing the whole time, and with such a fun concept! Can’t wait to see what more this rising group makes!
