In Light of the Day

My big takeaway from this one was 'how lucky are we, living in beautiful Ōtautahi?!' Some great visuals in this one with a well thought through arc. Nice job!

Scrambled

This one kicked off Heat #3 and it really set the tone! Super fun, very funny and great incorporating some particular cat and mouse tropes (like looking for the person, moving on then they emerge from behind a tree etc...) Loved the pace, loved the performances, be proud, team!

The Plot Thickens

I love how seemingly 'gentle' this was and the gradual escalation in stakes. Some classic West Country allotment chat too. Julian's flight was really funny and when the film properly took off, excuse the pun. The payoff didn't quite hit as hard as it could have, it's a strong idea, but I know how hard it is to make that kind of joke land in this comp so I still say bravo!

Gates To Castle Yonder

This was probably my favourite in the heat, just showing that an idea with some great characterisation and well constructed dialogue can take you a long way in 5 mins. The Python feel of the confusion and banter between the guards and then the little kicker wrap-up at the end gave this a real sense of constant story momentum. But overall it was super fun! Well done!

Tiny Pricks

Obviously, I appreciated it from the off with a title like 'Tiny Pricks'. I was caught a bit off guard, because this one just took off and I really loved the way they did it. I lovely little Greensleeves nod in there too! Very fun and some really good shots.

Singularity

Wow, this was great! In terms of overall look / vibe / emotion this one really hit a sweet spot for me. I also enjoyed the sound design (as well as the mixing desk built into the wall as a futuristic control panel!) and it made the film feel quite immersive in the room - and the room, rightly, loved it! Perhaps some trade off between feel and story but that's being very picky, it's 48Hours, right? Of course the jewel in the crown is the magnificent set - clearly a lot of preparation getting that together for the comp and it paid off. Well done!
