A Tribute to John Barnett: A Champion of New Zealand Film

Posted 26th August 2025

It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of John Barnett, a true pillar of the New Zealand film and television industry. John’s legacy extends far beyond his groundbreaking work as a producer and founder of South Pacific Pictures; he was a steadfast champion for our creative community and a mentor to countless individuals.

As a dedicated Trustee of the Vista Foundation, John played a crucial role in supporting the next generation of filmmakers through a number of initiatives. He was a staunch and passionate advocate for the Vista Foundation 48Hours, and we are grateful to him for this support and advocacy.

John's enthusiasm for the VF48Hours was driven by his genuine passion for seeing new voices find their way, and his guidance was invaluable to the many young creatives who dared to pick up a camera and tell their story. He understood that events like VF48Hours were not just about winning; they were about building confidence, fostering collaboration, and kickstarting careers.

John's influence on the film industry was profound and enduring. His commitment to storytelling and his unwavering belief in the potential of local talent helped to shape the landscape of New Zealand screen content. He wasn't just a producer; he was an advocate who nurtured the careers of many and brought our unique stories to screens at home and abroad.

John Barnett’s vision and generosity will be deeply missed. His impact will continue to be felt in the projects he initiated, the careers he launched, and the stories he helped bring to life. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him.
