A Man of Great Taste

Oh my gosh lol, I don’t even know where to start, so funny. This was very relatable even before knowing the reason beyond fishing that he was there, like that desire to get away and have some peace. The escalation of people interrupting (their map lollll!), and all the shenanigans were so fun and led up to that very heavy moment well. Moments like that hit heavier after shenanigans. And the ending, just chef’s kiss haha. The entire film was excellent

You cannot believe my delight when I saw Free Cinematic Luts pop up in the 2026 entries for this competition. I actually try really bloody hard to avoid comparing teams' entries to previous years but I was an absolutely massive fan of SHIT CHAT (talk to me some time about their grand final appearance but that's not relevant to this review)

Anyway I was absolutely blown away by the filmmaking range this team showed to go from the confines of an intimate space to showcasing the beauty of the deep south in all its mountainous glory.

Yet ironically the team knows that the beauty of film itself is in those intimate spaces, and its a really impressive take on the escape genre. The lakeside getaway, the fishing and the potential fried snapper on the plate is actually inconsequential. Its all about the journey and relishing the moment.

So when that moment of tranquility is interrupted by a dick with crass manners and worse still actual tourists, the frustrations and tension that rise is a thing of comedic beauty.

Almost technically flawless for a 48Hours film, this is head and shoulders above most of the competition through the teams' ability to let their film BREATHE. The grade is perfect. The edit is perfect. The script is extremely polished there is a lot to love.

BUT there are 2 glaring flaws that I would be remiss not to mention that to me took away from all the success of the film just a little bit. Firstly, any fans of the Coen brothers may not be very impressed by the ending. And secondly there is a cut in said finale that represents a huge continuity error.

Overall absolutely amazing though and one of my favourites of this year's competition. Great job Free Cinematic Luts!
