Mental Note

Nice work with a tricky genre. The song really carried the film nicely (always handy having some good singers in the team!). Some slick editing and I thought your jib shot was a nice touch at the end. Maybe a bit too long, felt one section in the middle was jarring and un-neccessary, but other than that a really solid effort. Looking forward to seeing what you do next year.

Escalation

One of my favourites of heat 5. Simple setup that worked effectively. Loved all the robot inventions and there were some really funny gags in there. Felt like it was a bit cluttered at times, some of the blocking in the office scenes at the begginning was a bit clunky and a tidier edit would have helped but these were pretty minor flaws. The story came across and the audience were with you. Well done :)

Vigil

Some good stuff in this one. Agree with some of the others that it was a bit hard to follow but you had good performances from your cast - script just needed a bit more thought in terms of finding the most effective/efficient way of releasing information to the audience. Great work from your makeup artist, and probably best use of the prop in heat 5 as well (the SD card).

With In

The sound was the major issue here, couldn't really follow what was going on. If you're entering again next year (which I hope you do) just keep in mind that your eyes are much more forgiving than your ears. There were some nice shots though down at the beach.

That Mess in Burgundy

Yeah some really nice work here (but we've come to expect great things for you guys so that was no surprise!). Really nicely shot! The opening sequence was slick as. One of the things I liked most was how tight and efficient it was - basically centering the majority of the film around one shot. Also loved how you used the insomniac trait, it was just a small detail that was slipped in skillfully. If I had to pick holes (and I do because that's just how I roll), I kinda felt like it was a lot like your film from last year (Dunedin winner) - 'Do the Knight Thang' mark II (albeit more polished and cohesive). Same style and character dynamics, so it loses a few points for originality and ambition. Was a bit predictable as well. However, these are afterthoughts in such a solidly constructed short. A definite regional finalist and a contender for Dunedin winner.
