We Run The Night

My favourite film of the night, based purely on how it looked. The shots in this were beautiful and the decision to have the entire thing in reverse made for some spectacular visuals. This is a great example of how to do a non dialogue film. My only real critique is that the line of dialogue was very much shoe horned in, and even in reverse the story was a little too simple. Overall though a great watch.

Favorite movie on the night, loved the original soundtrack and the picture quality.

Clever concept! Very cool cinematography. I loved the way you guys took a no-dialogue film and managed to develop interesting characters out of it. I did feel that the reverse footage got a little "old" after a few minutes - it might have been better a minute or two shorter. All in all, a great film. Note also - I loved the way you kept the none dialogue theme and put the line in text (unlike some films)

A good idea and well executed. Full advantage was taken of the reverse playback using fireworks, flour bombs to create interesting visual effects. I felt the story lacked some depth, it almost felt like an afterthought tacked on to give the well cut impressive visual some purpose. The genre is one of the most difficult to work with but I believe you pulled it off.

Awesome film! Was a nice change from everything I had seen that night. I was caught up in the story because it was being shown in reverse which was amazing in terms of some of the shots! Highlight was the fireworks, that shot looked professional and should almost be used to promote Dunedin! Easily the best film of the night without a doubt

I like this film a lot for pacing but mostly for visuals. The fact that they played it in reverse was great but I would love to see a version with it forward [just out of curiosity]. For pacing using I wasn't sure if they slowed some bits down, I mean it worked and was lovely, but did they slow some bits down for impact or just to flesh out the film? Visuals were great lighting was beautiful and the fact that most of it was at night kind of gave it a Nic and Norah's Infinite Playlist. Ultimately great but they did what they could considering not being able to have any verbal character development considering the genre given.

A really great film that was a stand out of the night for me. I also agree that this film would be an amazing promotional video of Dunedin as I loved many of the shots of the empty streets. The film had me captured and I wanted to know what was going to happen next. I would have to say that it felt more like a really great music video rather than a short film though. I would've loved to have seen some clever way of using the reverse footage to make the film appear as though it was moving forward??? but other then that this was one of my favourites of the night and I even went online during the heats to let other teams know to look out for the 48 film done in reverse.

Good film, storyline is a little weak but amazing cinematography more than makes up for it. Good to see a team who had a blow out last year bounce back in spectacular fashion. Would love to see it forwards aswell. Great work

Ladies and Gentlemen, your winner! At least in my old and wrinkled head. I LOVED this. Sure its a gimmick to play your film in reverse, but so what?! It worked, it really worked. Beautifully shot by (we couldnt tell 'cos their credits were attempting to circumnavigate the globe) but a simple, effective original score by Sam Mehrtens, and cleverly cut by Cameron Hunt (I believe) demonstrate top shelf film-making. The audience, usually rustling paper or shuffling about, were silent. Absolutely silent. Until the rapture at the end! My god, there were shrieks of delight! The protagonist, and his insomniac date, traverse Dunedin at night, in reverse, with fireworks (nice, very nice), a little dancing in the park and some harmless grafitti crime, until the sun comes up. Delightful. Crisp clean colours and good, no...delicious framing, have produced a clean, adorable film for everyone to enjoy. Watch this team closely. I suspect they'll be in the judges sights for the Top 12. Well, it/they should be. This makes Dunedin look good.

Wow! Absolutely stunning. Very good use of the 'Non-Dialgoue' genre by having the film in reverse and I still can't get over your use of locations, you guys made Dunedin look absolutely beautiful! Unique cinematography that had me staring in awe, I felt the story got a little bit lost towards the end but overall an extremely enjoyable 5 minutes, could watch over and over.

I thought this film was in a league of its own. The techniques applied to this film made for an incredibly enjoyable watch. This group told such a romantic and special love story, without any dialogue. I thought the simplicity of the storyline actually made it more pleasant to watch. The soundtrack was original and accompanied the movie in a way that even helped tell the love story. This short film to me represented what the 48-hour film festival is about; I have never had 5 minutes go so fast. I think this film left everyone in the audience stunned at how this group managed to pull this off in 48 hours…

Its always a good sign when I see the credits of a film, and I have written down nothing. This was the case with this film, because I was too enthralled by this stunning short. Beautiful premise - and you carried it out fantastically. There really isn't a whole lot to say, except that you had a great idea, ran with it, threw in some good production standards, and produced a fantastic film. If I'm going to be picky, I feel that it could have been shortened down a little. We got the film, we got the whole reverse thing, possibly if it hadn't been drawn out for quite so long, the ending might've had more impact?

i like the way it looked, but it more looked like a music video then anything else, and although it was fun to watch it didnt look hard to make it, the movie and then reverse the clip, and i reckon if played forward there would have been no story line really to it apart from running around the city. i would have liked to have seen more film techniques used as it was rather simple and got rather repetitive when all it did was reverse for the whole movie, so mixing it up would have been nice so fun to watch but nothing else really to it.. but yeah.

What an amazing little feature! A well rounded artistic feature embracing cool cinematography and original music. Only criticism would be that the story lacked some depth, however it didnt hold the film back from being what it is. All up, its young, positive, cool and enjoyable. Paul Rodgers

Best film of the night. Very creative and entertaining. Cutest couple too, sparks were flying. The original score was top notch. 10/10

Beautiful combination of cinematography and original music that effortlessly captivated the audience from begging to end (or end to beginning). A superior film to emerge from a somewhat difficult genre where the use of clever reverse shots proved both playful and meaningful. Professional standard which will be hard to top!

For me the purpose of film is to entertain. I can honestly say this is the only film on the night where my eyes were not drawn from the screen, which you could deem down to the lack of quality of the other films or the superior quality of this one, I believe it is towards the latter. It’s hard to really critique what really makes this film so enjoyable. It could be the raw beauty of the shots, the high quality juxtaposition, simply reversing the footage (which could be seen by some critics as a gimmick) or just the simple love story that appeals to all human nature. I don’t really know and do not not care to either, what I do know though is that I would really like to see it again and again and again. 10/10

Wow! Such a riveting movie that left me engaged from start to finish! I was so impressed with the quality and beauty of the film. Being the last movie of the night, after watching this I had forgotten about the rest. Well done, you deserve serious recognition for this enchanting film.

I loved the low light shooting and slow motion effect. I was very excited to see the reverse action of the film and hoped it unfolded like Coldplay's "The Scientist" music video, but it didn't. I enjoyed the end of how they first met, but the story did drag and could of been shorter or more interesting. More of a music video than a short story, but I score it very highly based on visuals and technique.
