Cadavre Exquis

It might just have been me, but I didn't get this film. To feel like it nailed the mystery genre it needed more than just having mysterious things happen. It felt like a hybrid split up into elements of a romance to start with, then merging into a drama and then horror at the end. The psycho killer ending came out of nowhere and seemed pointless and contrary to what had come before. The piano score was beautiful though.

People Get Lucky and Bad Things Happen

This was one of my audience votes, it had a lot of fun moments. I laughed very hard particularly at the planking moment (I reckon this will be the best planking reference in 48 Hours this year) and a few of the other moments too like the Maori guy doing a runner. Although it kind of missed the Road Movie genre, the film had enough charm to overlook that and just enjoy it for what it was. Probably one of the few films in Heat 13 I'd sit through again.

GOD BLESS AMERICA

A tough genre and cute short that put a smile on my face, sound and music were top notch and even though the shots weren't all that amazing, it didn't look bad. Kind of had a Family Guy/South Park musical feel to it and the song was definitely catchy with good performances.

Ruby Red

Musical is always a tough one and being a fan of other Traces of Nut films I give the team credit for bravely going with a more serious tone, although I will admit I was waiting for an opportunity to laugh. Some nice individual songs, good sound, very high production values, solid performances and I liked the attention to detail with the old car. Was that the Empire in Island Bay set dressed as a different named picture house? The poignant ending was nicely done.

Myopia

The scares and tension in this film were sorely lacking music, aside from that the concept was there and although the performances were slightly weak, the right musical beats would have given this more impact.

I voted for this film, performances were good and the freeze-frame ending could have happened sooner but the pinata gag was entertaining. It did take a little while to get into.

The Deliveryer

They had me at the trunk! From the delightful intro with an enthusiastic filmmaker being held hostage in the back of a car, I already wanted to like the film. Then came the audible oooooooooh from the audience when a cluster of syringes came into view and spelled out the words "Typhoid" in probably the best animated logo I've seen in a 48 Hr film. Then came the film, a Quest movie about a young woman who must deliver a package to "D Block" and along the way, she inhales some kind of smoke/gas that creates hallucinations. Hilarity ensues as our heroine works to deliver the package only to realise that she is in fact, the package. Some great effects and a wonderful Entrapment reference this was a really good fun little film that did exactly what it needed to in an entertaining and charming way. My favourite of the final heats.
