Vista Foundation 48Hours 2022 AND THE WINNER IS...

Posted 19th November 2022

We are thrilled to present the 2022 Grand National Champion Award to ‘Big Questions’ by Mitchell’s Here, from Tāmaki Makaurau / Auckland.

An animated entry that captured the hearts of the 2022 judges and audiences alike, 'Big Questions' was made by filmmaker Liam Maguren with voice work from Dan Desmond (Dad) and Emma Smart (Daughter). The team are also taking home the Best Director award.

Liam Maguren is a Māori (Ngā Rauru) Pākeha (Irish) animation filmmaker, as well as film writer for Flicks. Liam has competed almost every year since 2006.

“Honestly what they say about 48Hours is that it is sort of a doorway for you to doing films. … You get a little taste of it from 48Hours, you suddenly understand the joy that you get from creating something. Even if it’s not what some people might think is amazing, just the actual process of it you find rewarding.”

“Because you only have two days to make the film, it’s a great leveller, anyone can catch up to people who are constantly in the studio making stuff. And I think the first time we realised that was back in 2006, and we were just teenagers and hardly any other teenagers were even entering this.”
