Stuck In The Mini With You

One of my top 3 of this heat. I think the acting and casting let it down a little bit to be honest, like a lot of kiwi films ;) But all in all interesting story and well shot. If it was in a different heat I think it would of shone more!

Query

This short unfortunately was a bit of a fizzer. The script was over written, the pauses between lines were big enough to put another short in there, the acting was average, and the film itself seemed to lack any real ingenuity. It was alas predictable and formulaic and seemed to be taking the piss of the genre ... but I am just not sure that was actually the intent. Sorry to be so brutal, but I just think they missed the mark.

Who Gets To Go?

I have to say I am confused how this was nominated as a people's favorite ... But if I forgive the camera work, lighting, script and acting ... it was in essence a one gag wonder that was obvious after the first 30 seconds. It had lots of potential ... but taking the piss of themselves just seems to be the easy option. Perhaps too harsh but I was just left wanting more from it. My 2 stars are for the arrow gag which was one of the highlights of the heat.

Meet-Cute

Very cute film and well done with such a small team. Hopefully next year you will be able to enlist some more help and hopefully have it in on time to be considered. Was this short one of the best? No. But it did show great potential in the creators.

Best Foot Forward

All in all I loved this short. Witty and clever, engaging with interesting characters and story. If only it wasn't so obvious it would of been in my top 3.

Love Story Sessions

The intro was brilliant in it's simplicity! Was the short as great as their previous work? ... No. But it was still a very entertaining and as always a well performed piece. Toby was his usual hilarious self who made the most of every moment he was given. But the story itself just seemed to be missing a few scenes here and there which held it back a bit. Most definitely did it deserve it's top 3 placement in the audience favorite ... but does it have the legs to carry it to the finals this year ... this reviewer isn't sure but hopefully based on the performances alone it does.

Subject 57

There was most definitely something about this film. It had lots of good gags and quirks. The acting though hammy wasn't overly distracting. Loved the switch gag and also enjoyed the brazillian but not because it was related to the story. All and all enjoyable though too disjointed to be my top 3.

Headshot

Unfortunately this film was great! The concept, though simple in nature, was coupled with a great script and carried off by very talented actors. This one room Rom Com was very entertaining! I also loved the fact that rather than settling for the limitations of the genre, they were creative in the use of the shots and very beautifully done. Definitely the pick of the heat, though the competition was fierce from every single entry. Good work!

Surcease

For me this was one of the best films of the night and I was surprised it wasn't in the top 3 of the audience choice ... maybe because Hybrid has so many people in the team, it makes them unfavorable in others eyes ... The start of the film was perhaps a little rushed and not quite enough time was spent developing the characters before you were launched in to the meat of the story. But it was easy to follow, well shot, well performed, and well executed for one of the most difficult genres ... let alone the fact they smashed a phone and a macpro! Good work Hybrid! Hopefully the judges won't shortbus you like the audience did.

Roundelay

The production values were insane. The Acting was solid and interesting. The script was a bit average ... and it really did seem that there was no middle in this short. Just a pacey start and then straight in to the closing action. If it just had a little more backstory and oomph in the script, it could of taken the top spot with sheer slickness.

Between Light and Shadow

If the production values were higher, if it was finished, and if the acting was tweaked just a little ... I think it could of stolen this heat as it's creativity and quirk was bordering genius hilarity!
