LOVE.EXE Post-mortem

Greetings all!

If anyone is interested, I've posted the first part of a post-mortem on LOVE.EXE at my blog:
https://digitalthingsblog.wordpress.com/2016/12/01/love-exe-a-post-mortem-part-1/

I was feeling confident going in on the finals night, but after seeing the immense quality of the competition, this confidence quickly shriveled up and died.

Congrats to all the winners and nominees. I never imagined making it this far, and it was a joy to see some of the best films I've ever seen in the competition on the mighty Civic screen.

Happy to answer any questions if anyone has any.

Congrats man. Looking at your sig I never knew how much of a 48 veteran you we're.

We went into the finals knowing that we would win the very prestigious 'ultimate dorks' award. lol

I'll have a geeze at your blog. Would be cool to see what programs you used.

Cheers Robstar. Loved your film. Could definitely class as Musical, which was sadly missed this year.

Haven't added a section yet for software, but we used Blender 3D, After Effects and Premiere.

Sam, was incredibly impressed by the style and quality of your film.

A couple of questions that I have are:
What took the longest to do?
At what point did you realise that it was going to be something pretty cool?
At the Wellington finals you indicated that animation wasn't your strong point/you lacked experience in it, what made you go in that direction?

Cheers dramamike,

Longest process would have to be the lighting/rendering into the wee hours of Sunday morning. Didn't get any sleep on that night. The process was to do a quick and dirty lighting job on a shot then transfer the files to render on one of the 4 high end PC's I had access to. Rinse and repeat for about 10 hours straight.
Second to that would be the high resolution asset creation which took up half of Saturday.

Into the early hours of Sunday morning I thought it was coming along a lot better than I thought, everything felt like it was clicking together and it was going to get done. I felt like the film could be a winner after seeing some of the shots come through the pipeline, if I were to play my cards right for the sliver of time I had left, however I wasn't sure if I was thinking rationally or I was just really tired.

I signed up this year at last minute without any real plans on putting a movie together. Since I wasn't with a team this year, I thought I'd attempt to try something new and risky. I've done a lot of client jobs where I would do a couple of seconds of 3D animation (mostly for CTV), but have never tried doing something as big as this. I figured if I limited the shorts time limit to a minute and a half I could pull it off, by the time the previs was done however, things got a little out of hand.

Aw thanks homie. The quality of films this year we're incredible. We we're extremely proud just to be a part of the Finals. Let alone win anything at all. lol

What's next for you man? I think you should seek TVNZ funding and make either a film or TV series.

I've dabbled in AE quite a bit, but I'm too afraid to do anything during the 48 in case my computer craps out.

You took a big gamble this year, and it payed off handsomely. We played it safe and didn't try anything fancy. Next year we will :)

Saw your film at the final sam and thought it was fabulous too.

I've always wanted to do some sort of animation for the competition but I fear my time management isnt anywhere near quick enough to get it done with in 48 hours.

@Robstar Rapper: There is always that fear in the back of my head about computers crapping out. I had a 'oh shit' moment on Saturday night when renders were taking hours to complete.

No plans for a film or TV series just yet. I've got a couple of more animated shorts lined up however.

@star striker: Cheers! All it takes is practice :)

I've posted a part 2 (and probably the last part) of my post-mortem at my blog.

Dude I loved your film and was blown away by the quality of the animation that you pulled off in 48 hours.

We've done a lot of stop animation and last year I did 2D animation for the first time, so I understand how long things take and the risks with animation.

I thought your story was well told and I thought of it more as a Pixar short, than a 48hour short. Awesome work. Interested to see what you come up with this year.
