What’s the process for discovering that your film has been officially disqualified?

Does completely missing an element or not properly doing your genre get you officially disqualified? Or do you just get judged accordingly?

Are full blown disqifications saved for more quantifiable things like run time and copyright?

Asking for a friend.

You will at least know if you were DQ'd at the end of your heat when the audience voting screen comes up, it will say there. If you forgot something, chances are a lot of the eagle eyed viewers simply won't vote for you. Don't stress about it though, seeing your film in your heat is usually the best anyone can hope for and unless you did something so bad they have to pull your film chances are everyone will get to see your film.

I've seen films muck up the dialogue and still make it to the regionals. Even questionable technical shots. But all is ok. So long as you don't use copyright footage or song.

I think a totally missed element will likely be DQ, because the elements are always so flexible there's basically no excuses. If you made an inarguably wrong genre film, like a musical without a song, I hope you'd also be DQed for that.

Being borderline on your genre is de rigeur for 48hours though, as there's a lot of room for interpretation. As long as you did something in the right direction of your assigned genre I doubt you'd be DQed, but you'd have a very hard time with the judges.

Before the heats we only disqualify for lateness, length, or catastrophic technical failures like no sound / corrupt files.

in reply to Andrew Todd:

To follow up on Andrew's comment - if there is a technical issue with the file we received we'll be in touch. Most regions have checked their films but a few are finishing that process up in the next day or so.

I doubt anyone has time (at least in the bigger centres) to review the films for element compliance. You wouldn't be officially disqualified for that, you'd just not make it past judges.

The only thing I can think of that fairly consistently causes post-screening disqualification is rights issues or clear rule breaking. Teams have been removed from eligibility (and maybe even stripped of audience awards?) in the past for having used copyright content they didn't clear, or obvious rule breaking (most notably the use of footage shot outside 48Hours weekend, but that's less of an issue now).
