PJ Wildcard

Peter Jackson selects his Wildcards from the shorts.

How does this work? Any idea? Obviously his time is too valuable to be watching 800 short films. My guess is he selects from the city finalists that don't get selected for the grand finals.

Would that mean some pretty good films (Sneaky Horses, Traces of Nut, Couch Kumaras etc) wouldn't get viewed by PJ? However all city finalists from the 'Naki and Gizzy will?

I resent that.

But anyways nobody knows. I'm pretty sure he combs through the teams that he's familiar with. And or finalists. Doesn't mean to say that he watches them all, he probably has a short attention span. Watches 10 seconds then skips if it is shit.

I'm not 100% sure of the facts so don't quote me, but I have heard that a film in 2006(?) was a wildcard and was not a finalist. I doubt Peter Jackson watches all the films - he probably has a team of PJ minions that pick a top few that he chooses from.

Either way, he's a pretty busy man. The one thing me and a few others have found frustrating with the PJ Wildcard Picks is that they always go to teams with a fair amount of $$ behind them as well as semi-famous actors. Oh well, it's not like I'm in charge.

pretty sure that film in 2006 was by taika waititi - who by that stage had already been nominated for an oscar and was well and truly on pj's radar.

so if you're not in the city finals and you're not an oscar nominee, i wouldn't expect a wild card pick to be brutally honest.

I've been told he does usually watch a heck of a lot of the entries (I remember hearing 80-100 would be usual but I might have that wrong) but as to how many would be viewed as potential wildcards the number would be a lot less than that due to his time constraints. I have a reasonably good idea as to how many but that would kind of spoil the fun :p

Nah, Lease was an Auckland city finalist. It just didn't win Auckland but went on to win Nationally, I'm pretty sure?

And actually I'm completely wrong about Taika's film too - that was a Wellington city finalist.

So what was the other PJ wild card from 2006 that wasn't a city finalist??

I don't think it exists. I read somewhere that it was a short with mice in it - made by Charlie Bleakley I believe - but I am pretty sure that I saw that at the Wgtn finals.

I don't know what that means. Are you saying they used to play 15 films at the final, but only 12 were finalists?

No. Always been 12 films at wgtn final obviously always some films close. And those close ones would have been recommended to pj in the past hence masonic making it in2006.

I'm moderately certain that PJ has seen films for consideration that didn't make the finals. I'm also not entirely convinced he gets shown all the finalists.

I don't know, so I'm basically pulling this out of my ass, but I believe that city managers are instructed to deliver some number of their "best" to Ant (maybe?) and a subset of those (or all?) are then sent to PJ for consideration.

The "best" in that case is most likely to be drawn from the finalists (for obvious reasons) but if the city manager or some judges think that some stand out film didn't make the finals for whatever reason, but still has the right stuff then they can include that.

Again - I don't know, I'm just guessing, or imagining, or something. But that's been my "understanding" of the process for some time. It's entirely possible that it was like that once and isn't any more, or it never was like that and I'm an idiot, or that it changes every year.

It's all a great glorious mystery.

He definitely sees some non city finalists, as well as some finalists. Which ones, or how many, is a closely guarded secret, and will and should remain that way. Not even the teams find out unless they're picked as one of the three.
