Music

Hi all,
Have trawled the Forum for a clear steer on where we can access music that is allowed in the Festival - found reference to Big Bang Fuzz that was in 2011 when they were a sponsor. It doesn't appear this is still the case, and looks like you need to apply for a licence. We are a school team and it is important that our film and hard work do not get disqualified due to using music that is not allowed. Some clear advice would be welcome... Hi there - Big Bang and Fuzz were a sponsor a while back - they are no longer a sponsor so you can't use their material without a license.

So what can you use? You need to source music that you have permission to use from the writer/performer - there are four options:
1 - make it yourself
2 - buy some - there are sites such as premiumbeat.com that charge a small amount for music tracks and you can purchase from immediately
3 - ask a local musician - honestly - jump online and make some calls - people are nice if you ask nicely
4 - find some music that is in the public domain or has been posted up with a creative commons license or similar allowing you to use it.

You can start your search with these sites:
https://creativecommons.org/about/program-areas/arts-culture/arts-culture-resources/legalmusicforvideos/
http://freemusicarchive.org/curator/Creative_Commons/
https://freesound.org/

Make sure you read the information carefully as there are different types of creative commons licenses so you need to pick the correct ones.

Hi Ruth,
thank you so much, that is the best advice I have seen anywhere. I hope that it helps many others too. For future years we will try to use local artists.

If you're at a loss for royalty free music for your film, you can't go wrong with the old reliable INCOMPETECH.com! You can use any of the music on this site (and there are hundreds of tracks) as long as you put the following licence in your credits:

Thanks Kevin - I also ran into https://artlist.io/ which offers their full list for US$199 per year including commercial use, which may work for some. George

For the sake of those who have been in the competition for a while, can we stop using Incompetech and anything else from the iMovie music library?

Come on people... let's do better.
We needa seek music partners for this competition.

Agreed - I’d even be prepared to pay a ‘weekend licence’ fee is it was reasonable

We started with original scores back when we thought we were invincible filmmakers about to take on the world.

Moved to the downloadable/editable pathway (BB&F and Mr MacLeod). And this year committed to originals again. I think it depends on what musical access you have. Finding a good band is only half the solution if their music and your film don't quite gel.

Either/any approach is equally viable if it strengthens your ability for your film to tell your story.

For us it really depends on who we have available.
We try to have a composer or muso on our team each year.
Sometimes is has worked really well (in fact usually).
Often supported by small pieces of Creative Commons music.
