Failure rate?

I'm intrigued by the seemingly high number of films that failed to make the finish line in Wellington this year.
With about 35 minutes to go there were 120-130 teams still to hand in.
I didn't count them, but no where near that number arrived. I'd guess may 50-60 no shows at the finish line. (Cue Wellingon managers for correction...)

I've never seen this high a failure rate (50/185) in Wellington. More surprising with the extra hour, but perhaps teams pushed the boat out more.

What was it like around the rest of the country?

I was 19 when I made my first 48 film, which was also my first ever film (beyond mucking around with mates).

There were many things wrong with it, but I'm glad that we still competed with the adult teams, and were able to see how good films could be in this competition.

Even if I had only been 13 I still would've wanted to compete with the great teams, definitely the best way to learn. Just look at Calvin Sang.

Maybe we could have a new thread after the comp is finished that shows off our first films alongside this year's entries? I'm sure that would motivate plenty of the younger teams (and would be good for a laugh too).

Half Shell Productions:
Rialto 48 Hours 2014 - Siren's Call (Time Travel)
Rialto 48 Hours 2013 - 17:09 (Techno Thriller) - Best Makeup (Auckland), Finalist Best Makeup (National)
V48 2012 - Finger Bang (Action) - Best Script (Auckland), Finalist Best Script (National)
V48 2011 - Best Foot Forward (Rom Com)
V48 2010 - Love Game (Sports)

Previous Teams:
V48 2009 - Little Death (Musical)
V48 2008 - Misconceptions (Romance)
V48 2007 - Grind World (Grindhouse)
V48 2006 - Monster Within (Monster)

I do not need to

I find myself reading these lines on the school teams and agreeing totally. The High Schools already have a separate comp for HS generated work run by NAME later in the year (or at least they used to, not sure about recently).

Last year my suggestions/prodding around "Best in Genre" got shot down in flames but I'm thinking it again this year ... only because looking at the Audience Favs so far I'm thinking it's going to have to be a really good Rom-Com in order to break through the paper ceiling of Horror/Mystery/Intrigue/TimeTravel. NOT advocating any changes to the comp though, I got that out of my system last year. Cheers.

PS Thanks Ruth for explaining the Heat set up process, I feel much better informed and understand totally.

The first year we entered,
I was on a Mac Pro with FCP6
and the render times were outrageous.
It was like 1.5 hours to render the 7-minute thing.
Needless to say, our workflow was pretty effed up.

Subsequent years I've been on a Macbook Pro with FCPX
and the render times have been drastically reduced.

Same computer this year and last,
and it's a little slower than real-time for exporting to ProRes
and then about the same for encoding via Adobe Media Encoder.

Ended up being about 15 minutes all up.

2014 - Robocrop - "Pads of Passion" RomCom (Best Original Score - Christchurch)
2013 - Robocrop - "The Price of Pilsner" Horror
2012 - Robocrop - "Promises" Crime - DQed (Nominated Best DQed Film)
2011 - Robocrop - "Protocol" One Room (Crime) - LATE

You're right. I've done some homework and I'm not on this old system next year. I won't tell you what we're using but just think black & white analogue TV compared to digital flat screen.

The edit program is actually quite good, its just the system we're running on. But man we were so rapped at 1hr 40min render and still got in ahead of time. Saw our heat tonight, and we feared pretty well compared to some good quality stuff out there.

Anyway looking forward to next year already... We'll be gunning for a lower render time for sure. Cheers

Good to hear you've found a contributing factor. Latest versions of software also help. When we went from Adobe Premier Element V9 to V11 we found that a 2 hour stage show DVD could be rendered and cut in just over an hour rather than the previous 3 hours (on the same PC). Adobe put a lot of work into making V11 render a lot, lot better than earlier versions do.

Final Cut Pro doesn't take the mp4 files as they are off the camera

Aaah. That old chestnut "know the software and equipment you are using and test it before hand" comes to mind. Why do I fall into these traps over and over again?! Maybe there should be a movie starting Bill Murray about my life ;)

All positive discussion is welcomed. Disagreement is the source of so many genius ideas. An idea that is not debated is almost always dumb.

Hear hear! Let's have tension and dissent - it's the only way humans learn, otherwise we just go with the flow - think the 'Dark Ages' (5th-15th Centuries).

Yeah, I had to dial down the res for exporting time. It definitely showed this year.

just saw 2 Hamilton heats, and out of the 21 films only 2 DQ'd. Not sure how many didn't finish though.
