Failure rate?

I'm intrigued by the seemingly high number of films that failed to make the finish line in Wellington this year.
With about 35 minutes to go there were 120-130 teams still to hand in.
I didn't count them, but no where near that number arrived. I'd guess may 50-60 no shows at the finish line. (Cue Wellingon managers for correction...)

I've never seen this high a failure rate (50/185) in Wellington. More surprising with the extra hour, but perhaps teams pushed the boat out more.

What was it like around the rest of the country?

1hr 40min

Wow. That's still ridiculous in my view. 15-20 mins is the target, or twice that if the edit stack is really complicated. Ditch the laptop and move to a real powerful PC and you'll be amazed at what can be achieved. Aside: All Laptop lovers - yeah, I know some can be OK, but mostly they're not despite what the salesman tells you, so just get over it.

We were on a laptop this year and it took 13 minutes. Anything over 20 minutes and something is really wrong!

FCP X or FCP 7?

Dunno. It was on a Mac. No doubt that contributed to the problem. And yes Edius worked fantastically, I wish I'd stuck with it in the first place.

How did you go about importing the footage? Did you have the import plug ins from Sony installed? Or did you use Sony's importing software.

I'm not certain about little old Taranaki, I think we had 33 teams registered and looks like 31 in the heats. Finish line was calm and casual and I know several teams were done and dusted, in the can by like 2pm, haha. We were there with 5 mins to spare, but there weren't many others around. #smalltownperksandorwoes

I am indeed very excited about it. Kind of brought on by not entering this year with a baby on the way but always wanted to do it :)

Last year took 5hrs to render. I couldn't believe this year took 1hr 40min.

I agree with others - review your process. That ain't right!

My export from edit application was a little faster than realtime, and then compression in another application (Adobe Media Encoder) was also faster than realtime. A little over 10-minutes total exporting/encoding time for the finished film (plus some manual setup time).

In 2008 we shot our film on RED (somewhat insane at the time) and I opted to edit in Avid, where I needed to pre-process all the footage, rather than FCP, where it would edit without delay but needed to render for output.

The point there was putting as much of the 'heavy lifting' at the beginning of the edit as possible to avoid very painful progress bars at the end. Same holds true now - if your application needs to do lots of work to export your finished product, then find a way to do some of that work earlier on.

Pfft... Soft! I did the competition in 2005 within weeks of my eldest son's birth... And in 2009 with a 6 month-old. And in 2011 with a 6-month pregnant wife :-P

Or... Congrats - on the impending children and appropriate sense of priorities.

Ahh pregnancy and 48 hours.
My wife was due the shoot weekend in 2009.
Was in labour the night of the heat and allowed me to go.
Didn't let me go out for a meal or drinks afterwards.
