Editing AVI Question ????

Hello somone asked me to edit several different animated shots of a machine that they are designing in to one continuous clip (should take me about 3 minutes).

The files are AVI and they were given to me via USB flashdrive.

once on my computer (PC) they play fine in windows media player, i am also able to import it into sony vegas pro 9 but when i drag the file from the media bin into the timline it just dosnt want to do it.

any ideas on what this problem might be ???
i thought it might be the fact that my computer dosnt have the correct codec, could this be it and if so whats the best way to go about finding what codec i need and downloading it ???

any help would be much appriciated

Yes.

if so whats the best way to go about finding what codec i need and downloading it ???

Install MediaInfo or Gspot, which will tell you what codec is in use, or just go ahead and get the K-Lite codec pack (or similar), and that'll probably make it work.

If it plays in Media Player, then the computer has the right codec.

If it doesn't play in Vegas, then Vegas doesn't have the codec and isn't using the Windows codec. I suspect installing new codecs for Windows won't help the problem if Vegas isn't using them.

I would grab VirtualDub (or Handbrake or similar) and re-encode the file to a format Vegas will understand.

I forgot to say at the begining that i tried to open it in Movie Maker for a bit of a laugh and it didnt work.

Then i downloaded the K-Lite Codec pack, it still wont work in Vegas but it does in Movie Maker (dont know why this is the case) it looks pretty good so at least i have somthing but i still want to try and get it into Vegas.

Will try the VirtualDub thing

The handbreak converter programe got the files down into the time line, and its working in vegas now.

the movie maker and vegas version both look good so i will just show them both and let them decide.

Because Movie Maker uses the Windows codecs, though I would have thought it would work on Movie Maker if it worked in Media Player - weirdness.

I don't know about others experience, but K-lite really screwed up my computer by replacing some of the good working codecs. I would only install it if you were building your system from scratch. ie a reformat.

Google 'K-lite good or bad', and you can judge for yourselves.

well i handed in two copies to them and they are happy with it, so im done now.

would it be best that i delete it now ???

yes delete k-lite it is buggy at best

AVI is a multimedia container format which may carry audio/visual data inside in virtually any compression scheme, including Full Frame (Uncompressed), Intel Real Time (Indeo), Cinepak, Motion JPEG, Editable MPEG, VDOWave, ClearVideo / RealVideo, QPEG, and MPEG-4 Video. However, Sony Vegas can only work with AVI which is in Motion JPEG scheme or in DV codec.

If your avi is in other codec, sony vegas will refuse to edit it

In order to successfully import, open and edit all kinds of AVI in Sony Vegas, we had better convert it to Vegas more friendly video format like DV.

Best option, its loves Vegas, its free with great options.
