Disqualification

Just wondering how teams find out if they are disqualified. Missing the time deadline is obvious but I have seen some teams post that they have been disqualified for minor things. Do they get emailed before the heats or do you turn up and find out on the night. I tripled checked the rules before handing in but I guess I'm still a little paranoid. I'd hate to bring my team to the heats and have them disappointed on the night that we failed on a minor issue.

You would get emailed by the organisers if you are disqualified :(

Clear disqualification issues (exceeding duration, failure to deliver a playable failure) would likely be spotted before the screening and the teams would be notified ahead of time.

However there are other things you could potentially be disqualified for (failure to include a required element, use of pre-recorded footage) that may not be spotted until the screening, or even a later viewing by judges.

Basically the organisers generally don't have time before the screenings to go through all the films with a fine-toothed comb.

But in the absence of other information you should assume you are not disqualified and remain 'in competition'

Yeah if you are in on time, have the elements in there and your film doesn't exceed 7 minutes it should play and be up for an audience award.

As Dylan said, it may be further down the line that it's ruled out of awards but if that was the case we would let you know. Generally we're pretty relaxed in Wellington with an 'if it plays it stays' approach although I'm personally pretty strict regarding copyright issues :)

I'm curious how strict the final credit is
in terms of disqualification
as there were a couple CHCH teams that either modified it a bit,
didn't put it last, or, in one case, had no credits what-so-ever.

2014 - Robocrop - "Pads of Passion" RomCom (Best Original Score - Christchurch)
2013 - Robocrop - "The Price of Pilsner" Horror
2012 - Robocrop - "Promises" Crime - DQed (Nominated Best DQed Film)
2011 - Robocrop - "Protocol" One Room (Crime) - LATE

Obviously I don't know the answer to your question as there's always a certain degree of uncertainty with how strict the judges are on any given thing.

But my always humble opinion is that things like that and the 5 seconds of black and so on seem like they're just so easy to get right I don't understand why anyone doesn't, but a silly typo or some tiny variance? That shouldn't matter hugely. Not as much as including the other required elements anyway.

There was a team in the second Taranaki heat RESERVOIR DOGS had a copyrighted music track in their film track name Bitch's ant Shit by Dr Dre clearly played during the film - I think this has slipped through the Taranaki organisers as it has been announced as a city finalist! As far as I am concerned that should be an instant DQ...?

If true, it would be an instant DQ.
Contact the city managers asap.
They often check these forum posts- but don't count on it.

our team came in just a few minutes late and were rightfully DQ - the no copyrighted rule is as important as the 7pm deadline so I feel they should be out...

Hasn't been pulled yet and the finals are tomorrow night so looks like they have decided to let it stay which I think is wrong...? What do you think?

I think its a bad look if it plays.
Have you contacted the city manager?
I'd love to have some classic songs play throughout my films, but its not allowed and their place in the final should be taken by someone who has played by the rules. Because replacing them at this stage is impossible they should just be pulled.

Yes I emailed the city manager and I think it has been passed up the food chain... it is a young team but I don't think that is enough of an excuse even if it wasn't done on purpose...?

Aw man poor dudes. Personally I say leave it be. I've seen plenty of "slip ups" in the competition without penalty. Imagine how happy it made them to make it into the finals. And please don't give me a lecture about the rules. I'm fully aware of them. But I believe some form of leniency or compassion should be shown.

Yea but I heard there was a young girl at the finish line with 2 min left to render and she left in tears because of the rules so sorry but fair is fair.

Fuuuuuuck no.

If they weren't in the finals then maybe I'd agree but a team has been EXCLUDED from the finals by their presence, and who knows how big a part their cheating played?

(Edited to add: Assuming the report is correct anyway, obviously I haven't seen the short in question, and it's possible this is a vindictive hit job on a competitor's short. I just really doubt that would ever happen in this comp.)
