April 48hours? Better or worse?

I remember it was always in April, then moved to May. I found it a lot tougher with the crappier weather (especially Wellington teams!).

So nice to have it back in April. I noticed in our heat that every short (bar an animated one) was mostly shot outside, even at night. Would've been a lot tougher to say that in May.

Win $10,000 cash for making a 30 second Ad!

This competition makes me queasy. Especially given as it is about the number of likes/sign-ups rather than any kind of ad-making skill.

It's like street teams for a power company.

Sound Recordist for Short Film in Wellington

Typhoid Films are looking for a sound recordist for on-set sound for a short horror film shooting March 2, 3, 9 and 10.

Gear is provided (unless you have your own, of course), but our recordist has dropped out at the 11th hour and we're a bit desperate.

Unpaid, but a mostly professional crew, and looking at festival release.

Message me or get in touch through the website, more details here:

2013 Date?

Anyone know anything about when 48 Hours will be this year?

It used to be April until the last couple of years and I'm kinda hoping it'll be shifting back, as I'm overseas in May. Just wanted to know as it'd be good to start getting a team organised...

Typhoid Films Presents: Red Valley

I would say we had a shoestring budget, but I'm not sure we had enough cash for the shoestring.

Even the dude we set on fire didn't get paid (although we did buy the Mitre10 bucket of glue he tipped over himself and lit up).

One Shot Genre

I've only got the OG Silent House - and it's not one shot. It's shot on a 5D for a start, which conks out after about 12 minutes. If you watch closely, there are some "pan up to the black ceiling, pan back down" type of shots here and there that I assume hide the cuts.

Still a pretty decent little flick, though, but nothing great beyond the gimmick.

Digital SLR's, What did you use?

We shot on a Canon 7D, used two lenses (a prime for medium close-ups and close-ups and a zoom for everything else) and a Zoom H4N for sound. Onboard sound is, yes, horrible and I'd never use it.

No probs anywhere, we were all finished with our 50-odd set-ups by 8pm Saturday, edited by first thing Sunday, then we just fiddled about and handed in a couple hours early.

I think it's more important to get your head around lighting than cameras, but given a 7D body is now about $1750, it's a good buy if you've got the cash. Learn how to control focus, learn what ISO settings create grain you don't like and only use the depth of field appropriate to the story, rather than just using shallow DOF for everything.

What do actors think about this comp?

This was the first year we specifically made time for rehearsals, because we were doing a 'serious' one instead of a comedy. It made a huge difference.

Sure, it meant we weren't shooting until 11:30am on the Saturday, but it meant we moved a lot faster during the actual shooting and it showed in the performances, too. I think it's more than worth the couple of hours.

one of the oddest evenings of 48 Hours I've ever been to.

Reviews

I think reviews are quite hard. While there are legends like Mister Teas and Steelpotato who get around and review everything, which gives them an impartiality, it can be hard to take anything anyone else says too seriously.

I personally take the approach of only reviewing the films I really liked and saying why I really liked them.

I think most people know the flaws in their own films - I don't know how much benefit they get from having them pointed out again.

Thanks to 48 Hours

I've gotta second that. It's an amazing deal and the scale is crazy-huge. I look forward to it every year and invariably have a fantastic time.

First time I ever touched a camera was in the 2006 edition and now I make money off shooting stuff, not to mention all the other projects I do with mates.

None of it would've happened with the 48 Hours Comp.
