Christchurch City Finals: morning-after de-brief/-lirium/-tox

Oh, I was joking of course but that's no good, get well soon.

I am also sick today. Maybe these forums are contagious?!

AJ what are you doing here, instead of posting more reviews of finalists?!

Christchurch Finalist Prediction Thread

in reply to steelpotato:

Would agree that correlation is probably of academic interest only. There are absolutely both - 1) those films that do everything pretty well and might get a bunch of category nominations without somehow quite working as a whole and 2) those films that might not stand out in cinematography or editing or whatever but overall just work gangbusters - every year.

As for directors, I guess we're just aping the Oscars there, right? They seem to have decided that it is perfectly possible to have an outstanding film show up apparently directed by NO-ONE.

Ghostbusters is about nothing.

Slap friendship or redemption on it and dare the judges to disqualify it.

...here's a challenge for us in fact: take a look at this list and try to think of a movie that you *couldn't* append one of these themes to, at least to the point where you satisfy the competition requirement:

Theme 1 - Redemption
Theme 2 - Love
Theme 3 - Transformation
Theme 4 - Sacrifice
Theme 5 - Vengeance
Theme 6 - Friendship
Theme 7 - Justice
Theme 8 - Jealous
Theme 9 - Ambition
Theme 10 - Fate

What did everyone think about the Theme requirement this year?

I dunno that it was even really a "requirement". The list of themes was so 1) large and 2) broad that it's kind of hard to imagine anyone looking at their finished film and thinking "Oh no, none of these are applicable at all!" As Bloydd said though, maybe some people started with a theme and worked out from there. But yeah, I'm pretty sure 90% of teams made the film they would have made anyway and then just slapped the closest theme on the title card.

Ha, any insider knowledge I can claim there is definitely not up to date!

I will say I think the judging process (as far as I know, anyway) is probably less mysterious than people think. Basically it's a bunch of people having a big discussion about what films they think are best :)

Again, pretty surprised that it didn't get in a Top 15.

(shrug) Sometimes your film just doesn't appeal for whatever reason, I guess. The "take risks" thing might have been a factor as well? As I said, we were iffy we'd get in. I think as well that if you have a frequent finalist's film maybe there and thereabouts in terms of getting into the final and a less experienced team in a similar position, you'd definitely go for the less experienced one for the sake of the competition – and that's a positive thing. (Not saying that happened here either – just as a general rule.)

All good, anyway. Don't want people to get sick of us!

Still tied for most city wins with Kaiti Hill from Gisborne

Well there's some motivation. :)

We're disappointed not to make the finals of course, but I don't think anyone was super confident we would. Was just one of those years in a number of ways.

Looks like a sweet line-up though, I am gutted I am going to be out of town for the final! :( Gonna have to spend some time in the screening room.
