Lighting discount for Auckland teams

Judging by the grey rainy days we're having lately the PLS lighting offer is looking like a smart move this year. Shoot weekend is basically the shortest day of the year.

I'd be contacting them and enquiring about their LED offers. 1 great combo would be the Aladdin LED Flex Light 1'x1' and the Aladdin A-lite, you basically couldn't go wrong.

Also, I appreciate the civility of this conversation... if this was on Facebook I dread to think of where it might go.

in reply to Andrew Todd:

I disagree that "frankly it's the right thing to do" but then again, I haven't got a horse in this race, so I think I'll bow out... after these last comments.

Guns are an integral part to many many films and to add restrictions for anything in 48Hours (let alone guns) doesn't sit well with me. That's all. I raised my concerns about an 'off the cuff' remark from a semi-official of the comp. (read. City Manager) and I hoped for clarification that he was joking.

If he wasn't, so be it. I assume we'll find out if they follow your suggestion when they announce either this years rule set (i.e. will there be another 'Ultra' this year)... or as part of the Friday 7pm 'musts'.

As to your "...if you can't tell a story without a gun in it, you're not a good storyteller" comment, I hope most people would disagree with that statement, looking at my own avatar I wouldn't call Tarantino or Leone bad story tellers... they both used guns.

I don't think there should be any discouraging or encouraging of the use of firearms in this years short films. Art, in all forms, is surely part of the healing process and I'd rather teams felt free to write and shoot whatever they feel like. It's a scary thought to imagine teams resisting including a firearm into their story (if it was needed) because they fear a potential social backlash etc.

I bring this up because AJ (Chch City Manager) said (and I assume jokingly), "...don't put guns in your film". Perhaps he could clarify that he certainly was joking.

Like to Lurk

Post here if you like to lurk... even just a 'Hi'

P.S. My thoughts on the decline of the forum is that it was inevitable.

The technical detail available in this forum (and its predecessor) was well ahead of YouTube 'how-to-make-a-short-film' videos available in abundance these days. Questions related to film making and specifically this competition have been 'asked and answered' so often, and so well, that the resources we now have available (I'm thinking all the info under Help, Registration, City Info etc.) negate the need for new topics or posts.

Because we have this resource there is less need for a forum.

Think back on the busy years when the forum was most active... we had real fiddly shit like exporting from camera to tape to deal with. Now it's all so easy... so I lurk.

A game for the heat 'Drink When...'

in reply to steelpotato:

For sure there used to be a clarification on the website somewhere along the lines of 'being able to use premade 3D models' (characters, locations).

The analogy being that IRL film makers are allowed to scout locations, actors etc.

I've checked the site pretty thoroughly and there no longer appears to be any mention of that clarification. My 2 cents is that that's probably due to accidentally omission, rather than a rule change.

I disagree that this is clearly a new rule, and I'd say we go back to the mantra of "if it feels like you are cheating..." so I'd say @themorgan is probably safe (if he weren't already dq'd).

2015 Roll Call

Team Red Apple are back for another year. Just need an editor, some writers, a cameraman and some actors. Plenty of time.

My Film is Not in The Review Database

I think their are two types of rules in this comp.

One are the actual rules of the comp (must use the prop, get the line right, hand in before 7pm etc.)

The other sort are 'hand-in rules' rules created by the organisers to make their life easier, C5 envelope, the info card, the 5 seconds black with 'Made as Part of Rialto 48HOURS... ' etc.

Breaking one of the comp rules, is bound to get you DQ'd

Where as breaking one of the 'hand-in' rules, is a real grey area.

Auckland Finals prediction

in reply to CraigWB:

Craig - can you help me out.

I want to review all the films at our heat (Akl - 17). But much like the rest of the comp, being in April left me poorly prepared, and I didn't take any notes at the screening.

I've whipped up a quick shared doc. Between the two of us, can we write a 'one liner' on each film. That should help jog my memory enough to get the reviews going.

(I do remember yours, it's the others I want a hand in).
