2019 Thoughts

rip focus had a great weekend.

We were initially taken back by our genre - stumped on how we had somehow missed a bunch of bizarre ones and ended up with a genre which was basically the same as what we got 2 years ago. That being said, the fact that we had done a time travel movie 2 years ago gave us the motive to get creative with 'How can we make a film with the same genre, but completely different tone' and we ended up with an idea that was making us all laugh a lot, so we went for it.

The elements ended up coming to our script pretty naturally, we never felt like we were cramming them into the story. It concerned me a little at first - feeling that maybe we weren't using them 'creatively' enough because of how easily they fitted in, but that concern disappeared pretty quick, I think the elements can be both used well while not standing out, making it less of a "48hours" film and more of just a regular short film/sketch.

We don't qualify for Ultra until next year, but during the announcements at the bar in ChCh I think I found myself less motivated to do it next year after seeing what those teams were going to have to endure - but my mind could change on that, I have a year to think it over now I suppose.

Overall a decent challenge for our team this year and I was very happy with their efforts.
A week before the competition I came down with a pretty nasty cough, I didn't think too much of it as it was winter and everyone seemed to be getting colds. I had some improvement on Saturday, but on Sunday it went from a bad cough to full-on chest pain - an hour after the comp ended I was in after-hours being told I had pneumonia over the weekend - yikes! I'm stoked I had such a supportive group who were able to get things done without me, it's nice to know you can go take a rest and trust that your teammates have your back.

Heats begin tonight and I'm excited to see another 9 rounds of ChCh talent. Bring it on!

Thread about anything else!

rip focus is back in action - not sure if we qualify for Ultra yet..perhaps next year.
We're feeling pretty fresh, bit of a reset. The exam clashes gave us a scare initially with a number of our team having to drop out, but we've taken a page out of Submission Impossible's book and have decided to roll with the waves no matter where they come from. We're super excited!

Shoot Weekend confirmed: June 14 - 16

in reply to ruth:

Speaking of extra special challenges - curious to know if the UC exams were considered in the decision for that weekend? sorta wipes out my team, I'm likely not the only one either. Don't want to throw my toys, but 7 weeks notice to possibly have to re-plan a team entirely is a real bummer.

Christchurch - fantastic year

in reply to Clayton Hiku:

Who have then inspired many new and younger teams to strive to catchup to them like Pigs Guts or RIP focus. (Not that I am a part of either of those teams to be able to comment on their behalf).

*puff puff* finally caught up on the forums haha.

Totally agree with this Clay, in my first year I forgot to hit 'high school team', so my team ended up in an regular heat with CRAB CRAB CRAB, which I'm so grateful for because seeing what they did that year (Wheat, Myself and Rye) totally inspired me for the future competition, sort of an 'ohhh so THAT'S how you do 48hours' XD

Review Site

in reply to steelpotato:

If you look at the total reviews number then you'll see it's different to the ones you see, so it must be a bug, isn't having influence on the score though.

CHCH Predictions - Top15, Shortlist25 & a School List

I had the beginnings of a list like this and it was pretty much identical to Strang just with a couple of my personal hopefuls switched out (eg. PlanetFoxFilms "There was a way" and Moofestations "Natalie and Gregory"). Looking at these titles makes me glad I'm not gonna be in that room deciding which 15 are gonna make it. Exciting stuff!!

2018 Recurring Themes

in reply to Andrew Todd:

You may be pleased to know that thus far there haven't actually been too many V Cans lying around (3 heats still to go in ChCh so potential for that to change). The ones that have included V have been pretty on the nose about it - "It's the V making them crazy!" or "Would you like some V? The one I'm holding in my hand?" lol

48Hours - A Family Affair

My team is still pretty young (2 years out of high school) but already it's become apparent that having family who's on the same wave length as you makes this competition even more of a blast. This year our team had 3 families made up of brothers, sisters, sister'n'laws, girlfriends +some friends who are essentially family to us. I can only see the rip focus family tree getting more complicated in years to come! :')
