Was ALLOWING HD Delivery enough rope for teams to hang themselves?

I watched my film in HD in AKL last night - I'm glad we have HD. There were some other films there that were shot in SD and yes, you can notice a BIG difference.

Sound still rules tho - and I'm still mad that we ran out of time to finish ours properly.

But I for one hope HD is here to stay.

How much money did you spend on your short?

I spent $100 on an HDMI Splitter so we could monitor the 5D and let the camera operator monitor on his own 8" screen - it didn't work.

Spent $40 on cape material for our superhero and $25 on an HDMI cable I didn't need.

We spent a bit on food but everyone chipped in.

in reply to tarlen:

Phew! In my panicked state I rendered at 30Mbps before realising my mistake and going back to 8Mbps. I thought for a brief moment "Will it really matter"

Of course I knew it would/could - so I rendered again.

And now I see it would have been death!

;o)

Was ALLOWING HD Delivery enough rope for teams to hang themselves?

I shot in HD with a view to delivering in SD if it went bad. I had a camera operator I hadn't used before and I liked the idea of potentially cutting in in SD if I only had one usable 'two shot' from my scene - i.e. one wider HD shot = 2 MCUs in SD (not quite but I'm sure you follow me)

Plus had the focus been out I fully intended to take advantage of SDs softer look and export in SD

My team is up tonight so I will keep the HD/SD thing in mind and see if I think it makes a difference

How many people did you involve?

in reply to themorgan:

LMAO @ your reply

4 producers indeed.

we had 12 - 7 actors 5 crew

One actor was a child, small part, the other was our makeup person

1 production manager
1 director/editor - me
1 camera
1 sound recordist/muso/composer
1 caterer/grip/runner

everyone gave 100% and as others have said that makes all the difference

i would change nothing next year just add assistant ed to do capture while we film.

Come out come out where ever you are

Ours appeared in the finale - our superhero puts his cape on and clips the bent wire to fix it around his neck. We really loved it.

A Kiwi super hero with a cape rigged up with a coat hanger....

It was an inspired prop choice by the organisers...

Who else did the V48 for the first time?

@ Unicorns Definitely the people who step up to come and help you is one of the most humbling and amazing experiences.

I was a totally inexperienced director with a bit of a dream and so many people I didn't even know before the weekend came along and slogged their guts out to make it happen.

That's pretty special stuff

*sniff*

It's dust in my eye - shut up!! ;o)

Audio levels?

in reply to Andrew Todd:

Does that mean a very kind hearted controller might take my "left channel only" audio and send it out the right as well?

I don't know how I managed to do that...

I converted to mono, I'm CERTAIN I mixed to stereo... must have had the channel balance set to -1 following the convert to mono those 6.15pm Sunday night mix downs just prior to rendering will get you if you're not paying attention...

My levels are good - all compressed nicely with no spikes etc - just no freaking right channel!!!!!! Arrrgh!!!

Who else did the V48 for the first time?

It was my first ever in any capacity and I'm still buzzing.

I'm also genuinely freaked out that were able to produce any kind of film at all in 48 hours. I realise now what I only thought I knew before we started- and I know people say it all the time - that anyone who turns anything in that even, kind of, sort of tells a story has achieved something pretty amazing.

What are you other first timers thinking?

How do the Heats Work?

in reply to EdAish:

Think of it from Ant (and the other organisers point of view) - they need to run a successful event to keep this whole machine going along

If 30% of the videos are unplayable/jittery/messed up on screen - that's not a successful event - and everything loses momentum - and then sponsors lose interest - and we all need to avoid that

If SD means bulletproof playback versus HD = failed event then SD gets my vote - and I shoot in HD.

Better to have 90+% of films play and keep this event going than have teams and sponsors lose interest.

How long did it take/shoudl it take to export from camera to editing suite?

in reply to MM:

Couple of thoughts

USB1 connection to a flash card filled with HD footage?

USB1 connection using the device as the scratch drive?

Full Hard Drive where the cache was occuring?

Background Capturing while playing games?

Made a big c*ck up and blamed it on the hardware?

Massively underspecced machine?

All in all sounds like a result of inexperience. And/Or incompetence.

Your software. so, how'd it perform?

Used FCP + Canon 5D

Had issues with the capture using the EOS utility - it truncated some of my files.

I was seriously worried about my camera man but then realised the cards were full, the shots were there in preview, but the transfer to 422HQ was truncating them.

Dunno what the story was. Got to figure that one out.

Had the use of a BIG MacPro which made rendering nice and stable (not wanting to make people cry or jealous - I've used crappy little PC/MAc boxes before - I know your pain "about 2 hours remaining.....") -definitely get the BEST dedicated hardware you can - rendering is a killer when you've only got 48 hours

A Marnus - for those of who didn't go to school in the eighties - is a knob-end or a d*ckhead.
