Christchurch City Finalists & Award Nominees

haha so many comedians answering the phone - too good. I'm glad someone found it funny (i think secretly AJ found it about as clever as our film)

Solo/Duo Teams!

On the plus side, no trying to explain my ideas to anyone or driving cast/crew around, or asking people to help with moving stuff.

couldn't agree more - even though we had a tough time with our genre as a duo it was wonderful not to have to:

1. try to explain an idea to everyone
2. stop our desperate mates from making the female talent feel awkward AF
3. tell everyone repeatedly to shut up while we tried to record audio
4. force everyone out of the edit booth so we could focus on the saturday night

We definitely worked harder than we ever had, but it was also a lot less stressful than any 48hours I've done.

No MD5 Submission for Out of Towners??? Are we expected to upload the whole film now?

https://www.48hours.co.nz/2017/city/?ss=outoftown

This year we are only accepting digital submissions from the out of town teams, you must fill out your online wrap up form and upload your film through our Digital Pigeon server before 7 pm Sunday 27th August.

I checked this section of the website about a week a go and there was a bunch of info about submitting an MD5 file as proof of file creation for Out of Town Teams. Now all this information is gone. What happened? Can someone from staff clarify if this is a mistake?

Are Out of Towners expected to upload their whole film? Seems pretty sad as some of the Out of Town areas have poor internet - especially upload speeds. Might be faster to drive to the nearest city to hand the film in.

What if changed all the requirements this year?

in reply to AJ:

The crux of the darn thing is where does something like genre come into scoring the films? How much weight do the required elements have on the films placing in the competition?

Is the main purpose of the required elements so we don't cheat? Would be nice to see a scoring sheet or some sort of rating.

So Ant wants teams to take more risks this year. What do you think that looks like?

in reply to AJ:

- Using the same actors in the same roles every year (a lot of pro teams are guilty of this)

Sorry, I should have been clearer. I was referring to relying on actors strengths over writing. I get that a lot of teams including my own only have access to a few actors at most but that's not an excuse for writing the same character for the same actor.

Also in response to Ants request for MORE RISKS:

give us more REWARDS to match that desire for more risk in this competition. Doesn't have to be anything of monetary value. Could be something simple like having a user voted poll for a genre or character or idea - anything to engage us.

So Ant wants teams to take more risks this year. What do you think that looks like?

in reply to TheNimbleMarmoset:

I think the TBALC is a great example of a team that takes risks. I've been following you guys for a while, and each year it's something refreshing and different.

Things that are low risk in my mind are:

- Repetition of conflict and resolution with a twist ending
- Using the same actors in the same roles every year (a lot of pro teams are guilty of this)
- Writing a 'good enough' story that relies more on acting and production instead of story
- Trying to replicate success from previous years' films with a formula
- Following basic camera rules

There's nothing worse than watching 48Hour Film made by an apathetic team.

What are your pet peeves in 48 Hours?

in reply to Sam Page:

My pet peeve is "professional teams" that "play it safe"

I have to agree - it kinda spoils the spirit of the competition when a team does 'good enough'. For me 48Hours is about going balls to the wall and pushing the limit, not following an old recipe sure to succeed.

Let's get NOSTALGIC. What are your favourite memories from 48Hours over the years?

I remember working with the other editor in through early hours of Sunday morning. We thought we were the only ones in the house so we decided to have a noise competition. This probably went on for about half an hour of us trying to make the loudest, silliest noises possible.

Lo and behold, my co-editor's girlfriend had been in the other room the whole time, trying to get some sleep or some shit, and to top it off she was 'actually scared'. Like what did she think we were gonna do: yell her to death?

Thankfully they split cause she was bad news from head to toe.
