What I learned this year

Well... my second year managing/directing/producing and editing a 48hours film... I must say, despite our vehicle crapping itself just before the launch and our editor coming down with a debilitating vomiting bug on Saturday morning, it felt fairly relaxed this year!

Once again i learnt alot!:

1. Flying back from Auckland for an ETA in Wellington at 6.35pm Friday is VERY stressful! especially when you learn that the only person with keys to get into the team base has just blown up the car and is stranded on the way to picking up half the team AND the editing computer...

2. make sure you have more than one vehicle and driver available at any one time :D

3. Underwater cameras are AWESOME!

4. Don't let your cinematographer talk you into letting him not use a tripod for a single shot... Tripod = good.

5. Editing film is like riding a bike... first time back, you fall off and break your arm and from then on it is fine... It is good to know I can still do it myself if I don't have an editor :D

6. Sound off the camera (Canon 7D is INFINITELY better than off a cheap external mic (OMG the HUM!)

7. A good computer makes all the difference - whilst not perfect, Our film is way cleaner and more professional looking than last time. I could actually watch our film pre-render this year - that makes editing SO much easier! The render took 20mins instead of 3 hours :D

8. Getting up at 7am Sunday not 5am to continue editing actually ended up more productive than getting up at 5am (based on last year)

9. Experience helps! 80% of the team this year was in the team last year so I didn't have to answer endless questions about the competition!

10. Alcohol and spa pool on Friday evening makes for a very tired team come Saturday morning...

11. Facebook is a great way to organise your team... except for that one person who refuses to sign up for facebook... grrr....

We had so much fun this year :D

What did you guys learn?

got themselves known

Yeah, was reflecting on that with LizardWizard and we wondered if it was just one small component for some groups when re-inventing themselves into an unknown "new" team with no expectations on them. We concluded that probably the director or producer owns the team name so a change in those positions results in a new name. He who pays the $200 picks the name. We name changed after year 1 and recently removed that years' vid (for the sake of improving future career options!)

Really? Isn't that a great opportunity to show progression? I guess it could depend on what those future career opportunities are. Seems a shame.

There is a HUGE shift in quality from my first (which is online in an extremely low res version), to some of my later 48 Hour entries.
I cringe/laugh at the difference.

Yeah, that's exactly what I tried to explain to the 19 year old in question, but when you google her name that video was one of the first things that came up, so I can see it from her perspective too. Cheers.

Yeah HaynesFilm Ow became Asylum, and the Sinistral boys entered as a much smaller team under a new name.

We picked up one of Sinistral's crew and one from Bald Faced Cheek, who didn't enter due to scheduling conflicts.

I'm guessing there were a few more merges / claiming of crew due to the April switch.

What I learnt this year - trying something new / different adds a lot more pressure and risk, and we won't know until the screening whether it worked or not.

What we keep getting wrong each year - not having a committed soundie (not through lack of trying).

Good, this comp needed a shakeup. I'm tired of seeing so many of the same names in the finals every year. They're good, and they deserve it, but it also gets a bit samey-samey.

we had a shakeup a few years ago when HD delivery cost a lot of the "same teams" on-time hand in. Every few years it gets shaken up, it's not as bad as all that :)

Note To Self:

1. Remember what you said you would DEFINITELY do at the end of last year's 48 Hours and do it. Otherwise regrets.

2. Have two editors and two editing machines.

3. Good equipment = better movie. There is no doubt.

4. Sound sound sound. Hard surfaces mean badness.

5. Upload files from the camera regularly (at least three times on the Saturday) and start trimming off the unusable, colour correct and normalise sound... will save SO MUCH time on Sunday!

6. Remember to have fun, and to check regularly that the team members are having fun too - 'specially the newbs who are probably sh&#ing their pants :)

This is a really big ask, I like it. :D

It has the trait that all the best required elements have: flexibility. You could have someone practically humming a song to themselves while doing something else, all the way up to a full production number.

Without morphing into a different forum thread ... I'd love to see Soap or Sitcom as a genre one year.

they're more tv genres than film genres. personally i want to come out of the weekend with a short film that can hopefully stand on it's own outside of the context of the comp. that's a short film, not a scene from a bad tv show.

one year there was drama - which i guess would be the corresponding genre - but lots of people complained that it was too broad, which i guess it kind of is since really, every other genre that isn't doco comes under it.

Yeah we fluked the win in Auckland that year, but we started out on Friday night with the same gripe until we realised we were being ridiculous and to just embrace it. :D

Sitcom would be easy enough, but we'd get a lot of sofas and canned laughter. Soap seems like it'd be very difficult to really express. Like you say it's pretty much just "drama", but maybe with more reaction shots.

What I learned this year:

1. 6 years is a big gap between 48 hours experiences, things get forgotten and lots of things change.

2. In relation to the above, it's really hard to find the exact detail you are looking for on the 48 hours website when trying to check if you've done everything correctly - SO much information, and I knew I had seen it all somewhere before, but it always took me at least 5 tries to find the page with the relevant information - lots of time wasted.

3. Being in a team of 2 is hard work, especially when you are the paperwork/details manager, storyboarder, director, camera person and editor and the other person is the actor!

4. Rough cut by end of saturday, no exceptions

5. Shooting with sets just in your own house makes it easier than having to travel around. Having 2 people means not having to worry about a bunch of others, but nobody to go set up the next set while you upload and sort footage so that all happens on Sunday.

6. My ultrabook is gutsy as! Managed to cope with full HD footage and only took about 20mins to export. I think it's a keeper.

7. I wish it happened twice a year because I already figured out so many things I want to do better next time!

I thought the site was very good this year. Go straight to the rules page for the tech aspects and the checklist pdf file was a wonderful addition to print out and tick off on Sunday afternoon.

I also disagree with point 4 - rough cut by Saturday?! Yeah, Nah, can't see how that is possible or desirable. Wrap up shooting by midnight Saturday if we can then rough by 4pm Sunday is always our teams target.

We ideally wrap shooting Saturday evening, maybe with some pickups Sunday morning.

We always aim to lock the edit by 11am Sunday morning but usually it's closer to 12.30.

Sound mix and grade can happen concurrently from then to delivery.

A rough cut on Saturday is way too early but a rough cut at 4pm Sunday is definitely way too late.

Fair enough. I withdraw my suggestion re Soap/Sitcom. I guess I was thinking in broader terms with regard to the myriad of experiences that could be seen as "film" and not just the (longer) Short film or Feature film avenue. Web series is definitely becoming more and more popular. I've always thought of 48Hrs as a way to hone a wide set of film related skills.

I respect your point of view though.
