Ultra 2018

So Ultra will be back this year...

Who's planning on giving it a try? Anyone going for round two?

Also please feel free to speculate wildly on what dastardly ideas Mr Timpson will cook up this year.

And go...

It’s also the 17th anniversary of 2001. Which makes me feel old.

Dragon v Mouse have signed up for Ultra!

Anybody have any great ideas for what Ultra could be this year?

Some that I've thought about:
- 2 Genres This seems like an obvious, but very cool one to me, I don't think there's ever been two genres in a year that would directly contradict each other. Bonus points if you don't get to pick the second genre.
- One-shot would make a good Ultra if it hadn't already been used as a genre in the past. Although maybe with your usual genre plus one-shot it's more of a challenge.
- 4 minute max duration The switch to 5 minutes was tough enough, this seems like one of those "extra challenge that you can do if you're skilled enough" kind of things
- If we're looking at something like just an extra element, I've always thought "A Character Must Look Directly at the Camera" was a cool idea. But hey, maybe I'm wrong.

Your film cannot contain any dialogue.

It takes a lot of film-making skill to tell a story without relying on dialogue. Obviously it'd require an exemption from the Line of Dialogue, but it'd be a really good way to stretch our collective skills.

Well if they're changing up the elements again, we could be without a line of dialogue like last year!

But I agree that would be an interesting Ultra, one I've thought about as well!

Dog's Breakfast are in again. I think we're back to Lego stop animation this year as there's just the two of us again.

We're pretty much down for whatever. Silent film would be tricky cause there's not a lot of emotion in plastic faces but I'm sure we'd come up with something.

One shot - I have thought about how you'd judge that with stop animation as technically nothing is one shot and you could transition anywhere or move anything so that could be fun.

But why not just go hard and say black screen - no visual, audio only. Cause that'd be f#cking mental!

I won’t be doing Ultra as our team is only in its 4th year, and frankly, we aren’t nearly ready to face that beast.

But some cool ideas could be ‘Choose any film to place your short film within the same continuity of’ - you may say that’s limiting again but it would be pretty easy really considering you could choose literally any movie. The key would be to keep it creative and intergrating it well. Unsure on potential copyright issues with something like that though.

‘You must edit your film in Windows Movie Maker’ - unsure about the logistics of this sort of thing but it would be a great challenge.

‘You must use this song’ - and if 48hrs could lisence a really famous song that would be pretty cool. Although not sure if that’s really an Ultra level challenge.

‘You must present your film in portrait orientation’ - this would be a huge challenge on many levels, but I imagine the community might hate the idea.

Also I really think there needs to be a “Best Ultra” award in each city. A bit annoying for all the teams that busted their arses last year and didn’t get any acknowledgement for the extra work they put in.

That was already a genre last year. It would be funny if Ultra was making your film a musical though, as that tends to be the most hated genre.

One-shot musical set in an alternate past of a previous movie? Is that what you're saying? ;)

Agreed.

For putting your name down for something that's potentially going to royally fuck up your film it does suck a bit that only one team gets any recognition, receiving a cup. There weren't even any nominations last year. I'd love to see something at the regional levels, especially since if you're from outside of Auckland or Wellington you don't really have a chance at the big award.

It would be funny if Ultra was making your film a musical though, as that tends to be the most hated genre.

This would only be possible if Musical wasn't one of the genre for this year. If you drew Musical, then were required to make one anyway for Ultra then there's nothing extra you're doing. I'd not be a fan of having a second genre imposed on you as a part of Ultra. If you got to choose a 2nd one from the list then that would work, however, you could argue that most films made in this competition are multiple genre anyway.

What I would like to see is a range of further obstructions or rules imposed akin to Dogma 95 or any other film-making movement. So for example stuff like this:

- film must be shot entirely hand-held
- music can only be used if it is actually in the scene being shot.
- props can not be brought in. You must film in a location where the prop is typically found. (could be contentious!)
- voice-over must be used.
- you must break the fourth-wall.
- a scene must take place in (insert location)
- only natural lighting.

Anything that will make an Ultra film recognizable as such - through the film-making rather than the title-card. Last year the sequel thing was somewhat lost on the audience unless they'd seen the first film and likewise the use of compulsory elements from the prior year only really got a nod & a smile from veteran entrants.

SCREENING NOW: End - Real Time; CHCH25s
REVISIT: The Stile - Star-crossed Lovers; ULTRA48; CHCH25s

in reply to Mista Teas:

Some of those ideas would screw us for stop animation (music on set, natural lighting, shoot hand held etc) but hey we'd damn well give it a go anyway.

Did you all see the Theme is back this year (listed on the rules page) which is kind of second genre enough so I guess they wouldn't do double genre for Ultra as well. I'm guessing that cause musical is so feared that they are probably leaning that way as the thing to throw teams.

Or they are going to be really mean and make your film 60 sec max.
