The Best Dang Christchurch 48 Hours Films of All Time…

The Best Christchurch 48 Hours films of All Time (OK, since 2007...), in my opinion

This was my fun holiday project...

So many great Christchurch 48 Hours films. I've been involved, and attended the Final, since 2007, and been in awe of lots of films. But there are some that I rate higher than others. I've listed them here, in order, for what it’s worth, along with my most consistent teams (not in order).

It’s been fun revisiting these, and other films. They’re all in the Screening Room, for your viewing pleasure.

Anyone else have a list?

Also see Andrew Todd's 'Ten Memorable V48 Hours Films From Christchurch'.

1. Carboys and the Indian by The Outwits: 2007, Western
For me this is the gold standard Christchurch film. It's very funny, very clever, and very well shot. It's also a great story with a top script and top performances.

It was runner-up nationally, and deserved that. The Outwits have been very consistent over the years, but, in my view, haven't topped this one.

2. New Fish by TBALC: 2009, Musical
Christchurch's other national runner-up film, and easily Christchurch's best ever musical, New Fish continues to blow me away with its energy and completeness. The characters are believable and the set, effects, acting, and story work together to create the perfect platform for the songs. New Fish is the energiser bunny of musicals - the great songs just keep on coming, one after another, in quick succession, and remain with you long after the film finishes.

3. Binary Justice by Gorilla Team Gorilla: 2008, Science Fiction
Another top Christchurch team over a number of years, Gorilla Team Gorilla showed a natural comedy bent with this film. The story isn't huge, but the laughs are in the little things here: the unbounded enthusiasm, nuanced reactions and exaggerated responses of the leads.

I LOLed, and I continue to LOL.

4. Frequencies by Zebra Crossing Inc: 2009, Real Time
This is a 48 Hours film that could genuinely stand up outside the competition. It's clever, beautifully shot, and convincing, but it's also engaging and affecting. The location is perfect and the lead performance is compelling.

Frequencies was unlucky to have been made in the same year as New Fish. It would have been an easy winner most other years.

5. Death in the West by Gorilla Team Gorilla: 2010, Sexual Education
Death in the West is a solid story with a twist ending. Clever. But what sets this apart is the technical elements - it's beautifully shot and edited, and the setting and costumes are perfect.

6. Time-A-Saurus by The Otter: 2010, Time Travel
Probably my favourite of all. I've watched this an unnatural number of times. Hilarious, inspired, madcap - Time-A-Saurus is a rare treat. The Otter are always good, and always in the same style, but this one hit every nail on its head and none of them said "Ow".

7. Is Love Enough? by The Eh Team: 2013, Obsessive Relationship
This is a well conceived and brilliantly executed film. Solid all around.

8. El Padre by Zzzzzzz: 2010, Road Movie
This moved me in ways most 48 Hours films don't. The script is a beaut, and the subject matter (the Pinochet years in Chile) and the theme (forgiveness) don't come up often. Nicely played.

9. Supernova by Oldschool Cinema: 2012, End of the World Movie
Supernova grows on me each time I watch it. It’s smart and believable and uses the Australian landscape perfectly.

10. Mr Breadins by The Otter: 2011, One Room Movie
Time for another Otter movie? Always. Simon Nunn is one of the great character actors of our time.

Just missed out:
Duty of Care by Cat House Films: 2013, Obsessive Relationship
Photobooth by The Gentlemen's Agreement: 2013, Immobilised
Nicky + Eve 19/5 by TBALC: 2012, One-shot
Grindin' by The Outwits: 2011, Dance

Most consistent teams:
Gorilla Team Gorilla
The Otter
The Outwits
TBALC
Zebra Crossing Inc.

Yeah, TGA's Photobooth from last year would definitely be on my list. Another case of "if only it had been made in a different year...". Great list, definitely makes me want to go back and rewatch some of these films, see how well a new viewing matches my recollections.

The Outwit's Bechamel - White Sauce would easily make my list. It was city runner-up in 2010 (lost out to Death in the West) and even though it was a film I didn't like the first time I watched it, I've subsequently rewatched it more than "New Fish" - and I was a huge supporter of that at the time! Really clever lyrics, great singing and acting. As a musical, really entertaining and I think it's the equal of, if not better than New Fish as a musical - maybe not as a complete film, but as a musical.

My chronological list from those I've seen looks like this:

New Fish/TBALC - 2009
Bechamel/The Outwits - 2010
Death in the West/Gorilla Team Gorilla - 2010
The Package/Gorilla Team Gorilla - 2011(although technically DQ'd)
True/Strang Entertainment - 2012
The Wham! Initiative/The Gentleman's Agreement - 2012
Is Love Enough?/The Eh Team - 2013
Azanti/Zebra Crossing Inc - 2013
The Appointment/Spooce Media - 2013
Steak and Cheese Lies/Strang Entertainment - 2014

I was never really a fan of _Carboys and the Indians_ and while I've always been a big fan of The Otter, I wouldn't put them in a "Best of..." list. An Incredibly Odd/Strange list...defiantly!

Not to Suck Up to the Man etc but I really liked "I am Single", from 2010. Edit: And "Hot Foos" from the same year. Must watch some more recent Southern shorts!

"Death in the West" (the 2010 winner) was all class but just the hint of genre dodging...

"Is Love Enough" from last year was classic. Can't wait to see the Eh Team's short this year.

Looking back at past years in the screening room I'm struck but how awesome the 2010 Chch final was:

http://www.48hours.co.nz/screening-room/2010/christchurch/

I still think about the final line of Hot Foos and smile.

A couple of films that haven't been mentioned that I'd probably put on my list

The Outwits: Grindin' 2011
The Eh Team: Day 6 2012

TBALC / Team Moon

Aw yay cheers Craig, it's actually kind of my secret favourite of TBALC's movies :)

2012 was the gold standard of Chch finals for me. Supernova, True, Fukushu, The Wham! Initiative, Lionel Fantasy VII... the city got shafted in the national finals that year, in the opinion of this one-eyed Cantabrian. But ah well, I'm sure many around the country feel similarly about other years.

"For A Day In The Sun" by Burn the Dog in 2011 was another one of my personal hithero-unmentioned favourites.

I agree - 2012 was spectacular. Next best: 2010, and 2013 was also up there.

My most consistent teams list could have been subtitled "The early years" given that only one of those teams made a 2014 film.

The Eh Team, The Gentlemen's Agreement, and Strang Entertainment (amongst others) have been very strong for the last few years. And there are newer teams like Sneaky Horses, Les Cousins Dangereux, and Pigs Guts Films (amongst others) who are making awesome films.

That's a terrific list Stu! I'd certainly agree with what you've included here.

For me, I cannot go past 2005 Runner-Up GUYS & DOLLS - a Lego Musical with heaps of charm and full of catchy songs - as one of the most memorable highlights of my time involved with the Christchurch comp. It's a shame that its nowhere up online, as it tends to get overlooked. (City Winner BRUISED GOLD is brilliant as well, of course!)

Ha, ha! I remember you being annoyed at them!

For anyone who hasn't seen it:

The Package

I don't think it's in the Screening Room. The one that played at the heats had different music or maybe none! It also had a different ending that used the compulsory line. Only seen it once and can't find it anywhere else.

Likewise Death of Brian was banned from YouTube. Be good to see a censored version...I think...

Nope, no sign of it anywhere since the site that was hosting the older entries got taken down.
I don't think the filmmakers even have the master of it anymore.
I'd ask Cookie to rummage through the archive to see if he can find the submitted tape and post it to the screening room, but he's busy enough as it is.
