Sooooo.... How'd ya go?

It was a pretty chilled out year for us! Which may be a little ominous, but I'm also very proud of our film and my team. Finished the edit and handed it with about an hour to spare.

Anybody got any interesting stories to tell?

We were amongst the last to submit in Wellington- maybe half a dozen or so after us.
Officially 4 minutes to go.
We rendered and exported three times on the drive to the line.
One thing we learned was how to make a realistic fake turd.

Honestly in the lead up I was in two minds about whether we'd even participate, and still on Saturday morning I said to my partner "you know we can just flag this away, it's going to be really hard work", so then we took our kid to his toddler football class (he got player of the day) and when we got home we decided to go for it and as it turned out it was a really fantastic weekend. We were basically finished by 3pm, so I was able to polish a bit for a change.

Hope people like it, with my history that's hit or miss, but I really like what we made, and I really like our song. (No musical genre so I made a "sort of" musical in protest.)

"No musical genre so I made a "sort of" musical in protest." Haha yes! I think next year they need to ask for 5000 shares to get rid of musical, 500 was too easy.

We are happy with our finished film. This was the first year when we handed in the "perfect" cut in plenty of time (no double up shots or weird audio glitches for us this year).

This was the most fun I've had with the competition.

Usually I start to duck in and out after the writing is done, but because we were making two films this year I had to stay the whole time. That meant I was there for the 3am crazies on both nights.

Had a minor interaction with the cops, but other than that it was smooth sailing.

The fact we can say 'Zac was questioned by police after being hit by a car' and be technically accurate makes me happy.

We finished 25 minutes before the deadline and witness another group being out just by a few seconds.
We had to rush in the end due to some problems with audio sync but overall it was a great weekend here in Wellington!

You guys are an inspiration. Are you hoping to one day get to the stage where you have enough teams to comprise the whole of the city finals?

Two was fun, I reckon three would be possible (just).

There might be a way to do twelve, but the entry fees would be prohibitive...

We were 15 minutes late. Rendering took too long with all the 4k GoPro footage and extra audio tracks. Our poor editor looked shattered last night.

It was; sort of.
They had render issues and their film didn't make it.
So they decided to make a grand late run.

I had all sorts of problems but managed to work around them and hand in early. On the Friday night I didn't really know what I wanted to write and was completely stumped for ideas. The first script I wrote got a first draft and I started on a 2nd before I decided it was terrible and threw it out. After that I started 5 other scripts some of which had a beginning and an end but no middle or just a beginning at which point I got a message from one of my actors saying they'd not be available till late Saturday which would be an issue for my real time films. I had a headache so I just decided to sleep for a while and hopefully I'd manage to write something in the morning before the crew turned up.
In the morning I wrote the film that we ended up making but our 3rd actor didn't turn up so we spent the morning looking for an actor to fill a key role while I polished the script in order to make it better.
After we finally found an actress and a location we started shooting at 5:30pm maybe a little before and finished up around 7:40pm and then went back to my place to film some other scenes with the other guy who was now available.
I decided to leave the editing for Sunday morning so I could look at it with fresher eyes which backfired on me because I ended up being quite sick Sunday morning. Still I managed to edit the film and by 1pm I wasn't throwing up anymore and feeling better so I finished the editing, mixed the audio did a colour grade and the film was finished around 4:30 to 5:00.
I exported the film tested and then filled out the online wrap up and handed in a bit before 6pm.
I'd say the biggest difference from previous years is in the past there were other people staying at the home base so I some semblance of an input on the writing or the cut but here I was mostly on my own outside of the shoot. I couldn't get a composer to write music which is the first time since 2010 we haven't had one but I managed to compose something basic for the end credits in Garageband.

Anyway, "The Real Time Movie" isn't all that easy.

I'm also starting to question how many people from Auckland still use this forum as I didn't get any responses for my team calls until Thursday night when one guy texted me and someone else didn't email or txt.

Yep it's almost totally dead. I guess facebook won most of the audience away, but it does a very different job from what the forum did (when it was at its height), so it's a real shame, IMO.
